Waves crashed the sides of The Flying Dutchman as lightning flashed through the sky.
"You're gonna be alright, Korra," Korra's mother cuddled her close to her chest. Korra, a small child of about 5 years, started to cry. "I'm scared mummy," she whimpered. "No, don't cry, sweetie. Everything will be alright," a fearful expression crossed her mother's face, as if she was lying to herself. She knew that the sea was dangerous. The dangers that lurked there were unimaginable. But she had to go out to sea with her husband, Korra's father, to escape the war. As the waves started to calm down a little and the sky cleared up, everything seemed to be alright. But everything was not alright.
Crash! A massive monster emerged from the dark depths of the ocean. It had eight tentacles, each like a grappling hook used to snag people off their ships and into the depths where it once came. The sheer force of the monster, which was known as the Kraken, knocked the boat backwards. Korra's mother clutched Korra and her husband in her arms. She knew what was going to happen. No ship, not even one, survived the Kraken's attacks.
Korra's mother knew what she had to do. Placing little Korra into a small escape boat, she let the waves and the wind drift Korra away. "Mummy! No!" Korra screamed, reaching out for her mother, but she was already too far away. A tear rolled down Korra's mother's cheek. But her sorrow did not last for long.
Crack! The sound of wood splitting pierced the air. The Kraken had gotten ahold of the ship. Little pieces of wood flew everywhere, but that was the least of everyone's problems. Korra's mother's sorrow was now replaced with fear as the beast lunged towards the crew. Tentacles waved about and started to grab people. Some people tried using their axes or swords to cut of the Kraken's incoming tentacles, but there were too many. Each cut-off tentacle was replaced by a new one. Soon, the battlefield was becoming a mess of blood and moving tentacles.
"Aahhhh!" As a tentacle grabbed Korra's father and dragged him into the ocean, rage filled Korra's mother. "Ivy, help me!" she could imagine his words as he was dragged into the Kraken's mouth. Korra's mother, whose name we now knew as Ivy, immediately grabbed an axe from below decks. Rage, rage which she had never felt before, coursed through her entire being. She had lost her daughter. She had lost her husband. She had lost her country. She would not take it anymore.
With one swing of her axe, she chopped off the tentacles swinging towards her. It took a tremendous effort for the weak and frail lady to just lift the axe, but she did not care anymore. The adrenaline pumping through her veins was enough. As she swung her axe like a madwoman, it was amazing that the Kraken was almost losing. Almost all of the crew had been taken and killed by the Kraken. Now, woman and Kraken stood face to face, with their eyes staring daggers into each other.
With a scream that rippled throught the ocean, Ivy jumped off the ship and towards the Kraken. All tentacles of the Kraken were outstretched, ready to kill. If Ivy was going to lose her daughter, her husband and her country, she would go down with them. As the tentacles wrapped firmly around her body, she stopped struggling. She let go of her axe. She was almost relieved when the Kraken dragged her down into the depths of the ocean and into her mouth. Her last thoughts were, I will be seeing you soon, my dear husband and daughter.
The Kraken panted. It had never experienced such a tough fight in its life. The madwoman swinging her axe around and chopping off its limbs. As the sky started to clear up, a glint of light caught the Krakens's eye. It could hardly make out the outline of a boat with a little girl inside. The Kraken tried chasing the boat, but it got orders to come back. I'm coming, master, the Kraken grumbled in its strange tongue as it eyed the boat warily. Nevertheless, it swam back into the depths to meet its master. As it swam, hate filled every cell of its body. It had to find that child when he had time. It had to wipe out that child. It had to, or the child could grow to be something else even more powerful than itself.
As the waves lapped at the boat, a tiny golden thread appeared. Stretching from the innocent little child, to the hungry, hate-filled monster in the depths. That invisible string, that bond, would last forever.
