NO ONE TALKED ABOUT THE PHONE CALL after that. Rosalie and Emmett had returned to Michigan sooner than expected. Part of Este had hoped they'd stay a little longer but even with Rosalie's opinions about the change, there was nothing for them in Ithaca. Even their family hadn't been enough to get them to stay.
Este presumed that no one was talking about it because of her sake. They didn't believe that she would want to talk about it. They were right. It was all that contained Este's mind yet the idea of sitting down and having a conversation about her worries and Edward's harsh words made her feel sick. Right now she wanted to ignore that there was any problem at all because maybe if she did that her heart would stop hurting.
She ended up taking more shifts, working almost every night. It was what she wanted. Este's routine hadn't changed. They would spend the same amount of time with Alice and Jasper, she would lie and talk to Carlisle for hours but something was different. After that phone call it was as though there was no pretending anymore. Things were shit and that was a fact.
Even the once therapeutic actions of losing herself in a good song or delving into questions about the humans she saw in and out of the supermarket did nothing to calm her mind. She didn't want to be in Ithaca. She wanted to go back to Forks, back through time. She wanted to fly to Brazil like Edward had flown to Italy. She wanted to tell him to come home but some part of her believed that it was too late.
They all walked on eggshells around her. Believing that any wrong word and Este would break. They were wrong, she felt rather stable on most days. She wouldn't have delved into a meltdown if they'd spoken about Edward but at the same time, she was glad that they didn't talk about it. Este had expected Carlisle to spout some words of wisdom towards how Edward didn't mean a word he said or why she shouldn't feel guilty for nothing but even he seemed to sense his words would have very little meaning against the whirlwind which was Este's mind.
Unfortunately soon enough even the distraction of work started to flitter into yet another problem balancing in her mind. Due to the busyness of day shifts, the supermarket was forced to hire more staff which would have been fine if their solution to equalling hours hadn't been placing double staff on night shifts.
Este had gotten used to those hours she would spend alone stocking shelves under the illuminated, flickering lights. She'd plug in her tangled wire headphones and play songs that reminded her of people, places and things. Then as the day would break she'd drive home and enjoy her quiet days with Carlisle. If not for the suffocating circumstances they had been placed in, this would all seem rather perfect.
However this was all ruined in fast succession. Este wasn't forced to work differing hours however she now did have to endure working with someone for the entirety of the night shift. This person was more often than not a woman named Cheryl and someone that Este quite frankly could not stand.
