Edmund marched into the office, his hat and coat in hand.
"You've got a letter from him?" Edmund leaned onto the desk, examining the letter, before reading it out loud "Dear Boss,
I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. I am down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I cant use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope ha. ha. The next job I do I shall clip the ladys ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight. My knife's so nice and sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good Luck.
Yours truly,
Jack the Ripper.
Dont mind me giving the trade name.
PS Wasnt good enough to post this before I got all the red ink off my hands curse it. No luck yet. They say I'm a doctor now. ha ha"
"He's mocking us" Came Elizabeth's voice from behind him.
"Lizzie. Shouldn't you be on your honeymoon?" Edmund asked.
"I- we agreed not to have one" Elizabeth shifted on her feet awkwardly before clearing her throat "I should examine the letter" she moved to the table, picking up the letter.
"Does it look real?" Constable Neil asked.
"He sounds over confident, the laughing actually written down shows he doesn't think we'll catch him. It appears real" Elizabeth said.
"Scotland Yard have been sent fakes, this one seemed real to us too" Moore told them.
"His over confidence matches the profile we put together of him" Thomas told them.
"He gives himself a name: Jack the Ripper. Why?" Abberline asked.
"He's taunting us. He wants his name to be known, he wants to strike fear into others, it's a power move" Elizabeth told him.
"Elizabeth suggested that his mother was probably a prostitute that sexually assaulted him from a young age" William added.
"Why do you think that?" Edmund asked her. Elizabeth froze under his gaze feeling flustered.
"I- erm- I figured that his anger towards women, mothers comes from an anger towards his own" She reasoned, meeting his eyes again. Elizabeth felt as if she had shrunk under his gaze and Edmund felt as if he had shrunk under hers.
"Edmund. Sorry to bother you at work but you forgot to take the lunch I made for you this morning" A young woman with bright blonde hair and ocean blue eyes smiled brightly at him.
"Sorry Cassandra, I was in a rush" he smiled, taking the lunch from her, he kissed her cheek "Thank you" he smiled.
"Of course. If you would like to go to dinner tonight, my mother said she would be happy to chaperone us" she smiled.
"That sounds lovely" he smiled, watching as she left before he rejoined the others. William and Thomas watched Elizabeth closely, waiting for her to go into a got of anger so they could stop her from murdering Edmund.
"Unbelievable" Elizabeth muttered, just loud enough for Edmund to hear.
"What's unbelievable is that you married someone else" he grunted.
"You didn't exactly stop me from getting married" Elizabeth shot back.
"Says the woman that couldn't con-" Edmund cut himself off as he caught Elizabeth's hand, mere centimetres from his face.
"Unhand me at once" she bit out.
"You tried to slap me" he shot back.
"You tried to bring my marriage into this" she said through gritted teeth.
"You don't even love him. I dare you. Say it" he challenged, stepping closer to her.
"I- I- I can learn to love him" she stuttered.
"You can't even lie about loving him" Edmund laughed.
"I'm trying! You scolded me for trying to move on, the least I could do is pay it back" she bit back.
"At least Cassandra sees a future with me" he bit back. Elizabeth laughed out loud for them all to hear.
"There was a time that I imagined a future with you. But now I see you for the coward that you are. You've made your bed, now you must lie in it" Elizabeth said snatching her wrist out of Edmunds grasp before storming off out of the room. The rest of the men looked between one another in the awkward silence that filled the room.
