I just looked at Lam who was sleeping soundly on my shoulders. I had heard much about him but nothing about him right now screamed the image I had so far of him in mind. Right now, he just seemed like a clueless little tired mouse.
I almost chuckled when I thought of that and decided to hold it back in lest he woke up. Just then, I heard some voices outside along the laundromat. Lam stirred awake, realized his folly and immediately stood up. He stood nearer to the machine, firmly looking at it, but I saw a tinge of red at his ears. Just then the boys came in and they were some engineering juniors of Lam.
I observed quietly as Lam chatted with them. He was a completely different person, cool as ice, words clipped and little said unless the question was directed to him. I just blinked my eyes in surprise or confusion as one would say.
This Lam was so different from the one that I had just seen sleeping on my shoulder minutes ago.The boys left after putting their clothes in the dryer. They waiied respectfully to Lam and me and walked off. I looked over at Lam who was busy shifting my clothes from the washer to the dryer and just copying what the boys had done. He then came back to sit down, just a seat away and tried to make small conversation with me. I decided not to push it and just responded back. We then drifted into a silence after a while, watching the machines work.
What I didn't realise was that Lam was having an internal crisis debate within his head. He was internally fighting with and scolding himself over the fact that he had let down his guard and rested on my shoulders, embarrassed over having been in such a vulnerable situation. He was literally thinking between running away or saying sorry.
Soon my clothes was done. We collected it and he helped me to carry it despite my persuasion. He dropped it off at my door and bade me good night. Just as I was about to close the door, Lam stopped it. He looked at me sheepishly and apologised for sleeping on my shoulders. I wanted to chuckle and wave it off but I could see how difficult it must have been for him to do that so I just smiled and accepted his apology. If it made him feel better, why not?
But then again an idea struck me. I couldn't help it. I smiled, waved off his apology and leaned forward to ruffle his hair as a goodbye before closing the door on him! The stunned look on his face was priceless!
