I needed help. It was Monday afternoon, and the cold, slimy feeling of people talking about me slithered up my neck, making me sweat. I could feel the beads of saltwater form on my upper lip as I tried to concentrate in class. I heard a few whispers and took a chance by glancing behind me.
Kate and James stared evilly at me. Kate smirked, before turning to James and sneering something to him about me. James cocked his head back and laughed loudly, getting him a detention from Mrs. Jacobson for disturbing the class. I turned around quickly, sinking low in my desk as the feeling of betrayal twisted over and over in my chest like a knife. And Kate was its wielder.
First thing that morning, Kate sauntered up to me as I pulled my books out of my locker. The conversation went a bit like this:
Kate: “Did you get my text?”
Me: “No. My parents took my phone away from me.”
Kate: “Oh, well I was just wondering if you told the police about anyone else being at the party. Wouldn’t want anyone else getting in trouble. Take one for the team, you know?”
Me: “Yeah, I guess. No I didn’t tell the police about anyone else.”
Kate: “Awesome. Thanks, babe.”
The conversation ended. Kate stalked off over to the huddle of popular kids, saying something that made them all laugh and stare at me with smirks on their faces. I turned away quickly, hurrying away to hide the tears that began to drip down my nose and cheeks.
The rest of the day no one spoke to me. I heard wisps of conversation as I hurried through the halls.
“...heard she cried when she got arrested...”
“...bawled like a baby...”
“...James said she was a bad kisser...”
I sat in the bathroom a few times, forcing myself to calm down. With everything that had happened, with David and Lucas, I couldn’t handle this too. But I managed, and by the end of the day, my eyes were dry.
I learned that Kate and James had hooked up and were now together. It explained why Kate had been such a jerk to me at the party when James had put his arm around me. She had been jealous. And then she ditched me at the party while I got arrested by police. Maybe we were even.
English class went slow. I finished my essay quickly, laying my head on the cold desk to cool my burning face. I had one more week of hell. Then I was out for summer.
My parents had forced me to school, even though I was still upset about David. They told me if I missed any assignment the teachers would give, I would have to make them up or get a zero. It was true, so I went. And besides, they had bigger things on their plates than arguing with their daughter about going to school.
They were helping Trisha and Lucas organize David’s funeral. I didn’t like to see Trisha and my mother cry, so I skipped out mostly, especially since I didn’t want to see Lucas. Ever again.
The bell rang, signaling that school was over. I let out a long sigh and stood up, before being knocked back into my seat. I jerked my head towards the person that did it, and my eyes widened as Kate sneered at me. “Get out of my way,” she snarled. Her blue eyes pierced mine. I only stared back her with a look of betrayal. I had thought we were friends. Or at least as close of friends as we could get.
