"Listen, I don't know who you are or why I'm even here, but I really need to get out." I slowly edged around the girl. A single tear rolled down her cheek before the dam broke and she sunk to her knees. Awkward.
"Oh my gosh, Mia. You just don't know! I've been waiting for this moment and you don't even remember me!" She buried her face into the bottom of the ugly green gown thing I was wearing.
"Right, well, I just want to leave. Could we do that? Like, really- the door's right there." I said, snatching the gown back. Black smudges were imprinted on the bottom. Well that's attractive. The girl got up, wiping her eyes and smoothing her shirt down.
"Well, I guess. I'll have to let the nurse know you're awake so she can check you before we leave." She said, making her way to a speaker in the wall. Ew. Gross. I SO didn't want anyone touching me or even looking at me right now. I'd much rather walk out and go home, where ever home was.
The girl pushed the button and waited for the nurses voice to come through. I could only hear one side of the conversation so it went something like this: "Yes, it's Mia's room. No, nothing's wrong...She's awake! No I'm not joking! She's standing right here! She wants to go home.... Can she just-...can she-...CAN WE JUST GO HOME?! No I'm not smarting off... She just wants to go home... Whatever, we're going home... Yes, thank you." She cut the nurse off and sighed. Rolling her eyes, she turned to me and mumbled "Grown-ups."
"So..."
"No need for an inspection- we can leave now." She opened the door and walked out of the room with me on her heels. We went down the hall, to the elevator, past an angry looking receptionist, and out into the parking lot. I was relieved to be out of there at last.
"I'm Cassandra, by the way, but everyone calls me Cass." She said without turning around.
"Oh, and you're, like, my cousin or sister..."
"Your best friend. We used to be like sisters before..." She trailed off, deep in thought.
"Before what? What happened?" Cass stopped suddenly, causing me to slam into her. "Um, hello? Earth to Cass!"
"I don't want to talk about it. We should get you some clothes. I think I have some extra clothes in my car." She carried on as if nothing had happened at all. It was so unfair! Shouldn't I know what happened to me? But she was right about one thing: The cool breeze was breezing through places that should not be breezed upon. I suddenly felt self conscious in the revealing gown on me. I hugged my arms to my stomach and walked a little faster.
"So you don't remember anything? Anyone?" She asked, glancing sideways at me.
"Nope. Not a thing. Why?"
"I don't know. If you didn't remember me, you probably wouldn't remember Austin."
"Austin. Another Best friend?"
"Sure, something like that. And you definitely don't remember Marie, Jacob, Dylan, or Hannah."
"Right. They are..." Cass stopped in front of a light blue Prius. She pulled the trunk open, dug around then tossed me a bundle of clothes.
"These should fit. Anyways, Marie's the priss who thinks everyone likes her. Jacob's her boyfriend because he's doomed if he's not. Dylan is my boyfriend and Hannah is his sister, thus joining our little group." She smiled at me a gestured for me to get in the car.
"So you guys visited me all three years?"
"Everyday, five days a week. When they said you weren't getting any better and were going to unplug you, I kept it to myself and came to see you. We've hoped and prayed, Mia. We did everything we could. And here we are, making memories. Literally."
I climbed into the back seat and quickly changed into the yoga pants and the white t-shirt. I still didn't have any shoes but I could worry about that later.
"So where are we going?"
"Duh! To the others! I'm not going to keep you to myself, silly!"
"Mmhmm, right. What about my mom and dad?" I asked. Cass seemed to weigh her words carefully before speaking.
"... Well, you don't really have one." The car started drifting off
