Tennessee 1923

'I remember that day like it was yesterday I was playing with my two guy best friends in the barn'

"Let her have a turn" Rafe said "Ugh fine" Danny complains not wanting to get out "YES" I shouted getting in the plane after he got out.

A plane flew by it was red a beautiful color. "German Bandits at two O clock!" Rafe yelled pointing.

"You know girls can't be pilots" Danny comments "Says who?" I said sticking my tongue out.

"Increase throttle power drive!" I shouted smirking at Danny's way.

He only glared daggers at me before finally getting up and trying to get back in "Hey only room for one!" I complained.

"Spell it right Rafe" Danny mentions ignoring me wiping the board and fixing it.

"Rudder" is spelled with 2 Ds" "Thanks wingman" Rafe replied.

"Yeah" Danny forgot I was still sitting down and he sat on me "Danny get off!" I groaned annoyed.

He rolled is eyes smirking "Nope! You're actually comfy" "Rafe!" I shouted.

"Okay!  you two cut it out" he said hitting Danny slightly from behind him.

"Hey!" Danny said annoyed that he was almost taking my side he got up so I could get out.

I got out tripping slightly from the barely room I had.

We were now on the fence watching the plane fly over us amazed as it landed.

"Great flying dad!" Danny yells. I never liked Danny's dad he was a real jerk some days he was okay but others not so much.

"Come on guys imma teach you how to fly" Rafe said as we walked down the steps his dad drove away they went towards the plane she touched it slightly in awe.

"I get the front!" Danny  said "No you take the back!" Rafe yelled.

"I'm bigger than both of you and I should be in front" Danny says.

"I'm older and I'm teaching so no" Rafe said.

I got a bit nervous "Guys maybe you shouldn't...." "Oh be quiet Jude we're just having fun" Danny said.

"Wow it's like we're really flying" "Yeah I did it a lot of times I'll give her some throttle" Rafe started the plane up.

He moved one handle he shouldn't have "OH gosh!" He said as it started I backed up slowly "Guys!-" I yelled.

"Hang on!" "Jude stay back!" Danny yelled as I kept backing away thinking of whether to get the dad or not but he would be seriously mad at all of us.

This was it this is the day I'm gonna see my best friends die my heart beat faster as I heard their faded yells in distance I couldn't hear what they were saying over the loud noises.

After a few freaked out minutes they stopped.

I ran over as fast as my small legs could carry me "Danny!" I said hugging him as he got out and then I hugged Rafe.

"You guys are major idiots." I said we all ran back "We flew" Danny  said "You no account boy!" Danny's dad came grabbing him "Daddy- ow!" He complains trying to get away.

"I done told you to spend some time playing! With this stupid boy that can't read and this girl that you're just gonna fool with!" "Daddy!" Danny yelled I looked at Rafe traumatized because of the man.

"You ain't never going to amount nothing!" He dragged Danny with him as I went after the two "He ain't stupid daddy! And she's a friend!" He yelled at his father.

What I seen next shocked me "Daddy!" Danny yelled now just facing him but his dad slapped him making him fall down as I gasped covering my mouth.

"Come on!" His dad yelled tears and anger started welling up in my eyes nobody should be hurt like that in any way.

I only did what my instincts thought of first. I felt like I couldn't control myself, I went forward shoving his dad as hard as I could but barely doing anything as I was small and weak I was probably Rafe height but a bit shorter. "Leave him alone!" I yelled.

The dad grabbed me by my hair making me yell slightly "DADDY!" Danny yelled trying to stand up. "You want to end up like him too?!" Danny's dad yelled in my face.

I wasn't even his kid he didn't care.

He started dragging me slightly then grabbed Danny "I'll take you and your little friend where you both belong home."

"Let go!" I shouted trying to get him too but he only held my hair tighter soon He was knocked on the ground and I felt my body hit the ground as well.

"You let them alone!" Rafe yelled Danny came over helping me up keeping me close to him.

"Daddy no!" Danny yelled but his dad shoved Danny into me as he went over to Rafe.

"I will bust you up you dirty German!" Rafe yelled holding a board.

"What'd you call me?" Danny's dad asked as I held onto Danny basically like I was going to lose him.

"I fought the Germans in France and I fought them in the trenches and I pray to God that no one has to see the things that I saw." His father finished looking at Rafe then me.

Danny's dad started walking away but Danny looked at him. Danny slowly looked down at me before letting go "You okay?" He asked.

I nodded "You?" He nods before looking at Rafe.

"You're my best friend" he then looks at me "Both of you."

"Daddy wait!" Danny went after him as I looked at Rafe.
