Michael: "well, I'm Michael. Shay's father. What's your intentions with my daughter?"
Kelly: "to build a future with her and hopefully grow old together."
Michael: "okay so what are you going to college for?"
Kelly: "engineering."
Michael: "how long you gotta be here?"
Kelly: "5 years. I been here for 3 years so I got two more to go."
Lakesha: "how long y'all been together?"
Shay: "I would say three months but technically it's been one month because I didn't start taking him serious until then."
Michael: "and what you mean by that?"
Kelly: "She still had her guards up."
Michael: "oh.... Understandable."
Shay: "mom.... Dad.... Actually.... Me and Kelly have something we need to tell you guys.."
Lakesha and Michael raised an eyebrow wondering where all of the nervousness is coming from. What could be so bad about what she was about to say?
Whatever Lakesha and Michael were thinking that it possibly could be, they were far off from the truth.
The present...
Shay: "me and Kelly are expecting...."
Michael: "what!?"
Lakesha: "what did you just say?"
Shay: "me and Kelly are having a baby and unfortunately... things are going to be too hard on me to go to school in public.. so I want to do virtual."
Michael: "you, let us have a moment with our daughter."
Kelly walked away.
Lakesha: "girl are you out of your damn mind!? What happened to you not being worried about boys? Now all of a sudden you're all in love and pregnant?! What if he decides he wants to leave you to be a single mother. Then what? Hmm?"
Michael: "you don't make bad decisions like this Shay. Me and your mother always told you to never get pregnant while in school. And here you go doing the opposite."
Shay: "I know but... I-I really trust Kelly and- I don't want to go to school virtually.... Can I just be virtually for now and whenever I give birth I go back to public while y'all look after my baby? Please ma and dad.. I'm so sorry."
Lakeisha: "look after your baby? Pfttt no ma'am. You involved in activities to make this baby. Now it's time for YOU to take the responsibility of being a mother. And hopefully that boy takes the responsibility of being a father. I love you babygirl but no can do."
Shay looked over at her dad with puppy eyes. Usually if her mother says no, her dad will most definitely say yes. But this time, her father shook his head.
It pained him to say no to his babygirl but he knows that his wife is right. Sometimes you gotta show tough love. She will never learn her lesson if they was to take away all the responsibility of being a mother from her.
Shay: "So what does this mean exactly?"
Michael: "what it means, sweetheart, is yes you can start going to school virtually. But when the baby gets here we do not want you switching up to public and leaving us with the responsibility of taking care of your child. We want you to be around your child everyday, so you can have that bond with your baby and know what the responsibility of being a mother is like."
Shay: "but didn't y'all say that was hard for the both of you? I don't understand... I am your daughter. Shouldn't you two make it easier for me?"
Believe it or not but this is not an easy thing for Lakesha and Michael...
Lakesha: "baby we would love to take on the responsibility of seeing about our grandchild while you go to school. It's just- we have to show you tough love. It might seem like we're being harsh or selfish but I promise you'll understand later own and you will thank us."
