"Miss Marina Thompson's recent fall from grace continues to echoe through every drawing room in town, days after it was revealed her engagement to Colin Bridgerton was nothing more than a sham.
Of course, a lady's disgrace does not merely tarnish her own name. Like the tars of the Thames, it also leaves a horrid smear on anyone nearby.
While there is no parasol in the world strong enough to shelter a ruined woman, the fallen Miss Thompson can only hope she shall find a refuge... somewhere."
She did not know, in truth, what to expect when she arrived at the Bridgerton's home.
"You will be alright?" Malcolm asked, looking like he was going to follow. But she insisted he stay and notify the queen of their return. Someone had to do it, anyway. "I do not mind waiting."
"I will be fine, Malcolm. There is no need to worry about anything, these people are our family. Besides, I shall be an hour and I doubt you would wish to wait that long."
Leaving no room for argument, Madelyn bid her husband goodbye and trotted up the steps and into the Bridgerton home.
Certainly there was no peace when she entered their foyer and heard their voices carrying throughout the house and naturally there was no joy found in the parlour room where the family, including Daphne, were gathered.
"That the ton devours every bit of Whistledown's on-dit is the only thing keeping this family from shame." That was Anthony's voice. "Because of her, Colin, no one believes you are the father of Miss Thompson's child. But if you were to go near her, they will presume you responsible for her ruin, and your sisters will pay the price for your notoriety. Is this what you desire?"
The door was opened for her and all the conversation briefly paused.
"Madelyn!" Daphne seemed the most pleased to see her, welcoming the princess with a smile as she handed her purple velvet cloak to the doorman. "E-Excuse me, I meant your highness!"
