Wiping her sweaty palms against the folds of her skirt, Madelyn made herself comfortable in the high chair. Platters and dishes of food lined the lengthy mahogany table, end to end, and the palace staff stood on standby should the royal couple want anything more. She'd only been waiting a good quarter of an hour, the fresh scent of roasted mutton and beef, glazed almonds and honey custard and the pea soup, causing her to eye the food more than once.

The physician, upon his latest visit, did say this would be happening now that she was eating for two. It was quite common, he said, but she still felt as if she had to maintain some decorum so as not to embarass herself.

Madelyn patted her hair, smoothing it down. The room was uncomfortably silent, the only sound being the constant ticking of the grandfather clock on the other side of the room.

She didn't understand why she was so nervous. This was what Malcolm wanted, was it not? It was what she'd wanted, as well, albeit not so soon. If anything, she should be jumping through the roof in excitement.

The doors swung open and in waltzed her prince in a crisp copper blue tailcoat and long black pants, his hair recently tousled from the hurried combing it underwent.

"I am terribly sorry for my tardiness, love." He kissed her cheek as he passed by her, sitting in the chair closest to her, which happened to be the one at the end of the table. "My, this is quite the feast. Are we celebrating something?"

"I should hope so," she said. Madelyn motioned for the servants to start serving them. "Or at the very least you deserve it after the long day of work."
