Nonnie groaned as she tiptoed to reach the bowl on the cabinet attached to wall. The bowl she aimed for sit so far back in the cabinet which was a pain in the ass for height like her. She mostly cursed at whoever that came up with such design and whoever thought putting bowl in the high up of a cabinet was a good idea. She sighed as she gave up. Maybe she will just go for tupperware or something. Before Nonnie could turn around, a hand appeared above her and grabbed the bowl she'd been struggled to grab. Nonnie beamed.
"This is why you should drink more milk when you were a kid," Nanon snickered.
"Thanks, phi." She grinned, looking up at Nanon who smirked. Nanon caressed her head after the bowl no longer in his hand.
"When will you call me hia instead of phi?" Nanon asked, leaned on the counter, arms crossed on his chest. He watched as Nonnie started to moved the sauce from the pot into the bowl.
Nonnie rolled her eyes, a sly smile carved on her face.
"Until you stop working and start to pay attention to your little sister then I will call you hia," she said, putting the empty pot into the sink and started to wash it.
Nanon pouted, looking away from her sister. He stared at Um who enjoyed talking to Thai at the dining table.
"So that's mean you will never call me hia? Because I don't think I will stop anytime soon," Nanon said.
Nonnie huffed, rubbing the sponge on the metal texture, creating bubbles as she goes. The conversation supposed to be fun between siblings but not for them. The two of them sat there in the kitchen, listening to the happy laughter of the other family.
"Why can't you just drop it? Just leave it and start to have a normal life, phi." Nonnie said, voice became softer now that her face lost it's spark.
Nanon gulped, a tiniest of guilt stabbed into his heart as he tightened the fist between his chest and arm. Expression turned cold. Nonnie waited for her brother to say something but all she got was a cold silence. She bit her tongue and started to wash the bubbles away, cleaned and inspected the pot to make sure no dirt left on it. She flipped it and put it on her side before she heard Nanon speak.
"It's what I was born to be, it runs in our blood." Nanon started. Nonnie closed the tap, hands gripping at the side of the sink.
"I decided to took all the responsibility that father has left to us, so you can have the normal life you deserved. I can't stop and has no intention to do so, which why you shouldn't care about me," Nanon continued.
Nonnie held back the tear that formed in her eyes, she looked up, sighing.
"You're the only family I had, phi. Caring about you is my job, if not me who else will take care of you, phi?" Nonnie muttered.
Both of them quite grateful that the dining table were placed quite far from the kitchen and the sounds of TV and the laughters drowned their arguments. Nanon knew better than to argued with Nonnie, she was right, Nanon is the only family member she had and so it does for Nanon but with their situation like this, it's quite hard for Nanon to make his own decision and focus on himself more.
Nonnie leaned off from the stall and picked up the bowl as she proceed to walk out of the kitchen.
"Dad died for this too, so it must be something I should protect with my own bare hands." Nanon stood straight, watching as Nonnie halted, back facing him.
"After this, I might just be an evil man. Not your phi anymore. So I have only that time to look after you and then I'll return to where I belong. Where our legacy belong," Nanon said. He didn't noticed how Nonnie's grips on the bowl tightened.
