"Nora I'll talk to you all later I have to go now." I said looking up to see the Alpha walking back into the room. He could hear me talking from down the street but the illusion of privacy I got from him being in his office made me feel more comfortable talking to my family here.
"We love you honey, take care of yourself." My mom said, Nora and my father chiming in.
"Love you too." I said quietly, making the mistake of holding eye contact with him and getting to see his pupils dilate as he heard me say those words. I looked away, hanging up and holding the phone out to him for him to take back.
"I thought you'd at least give me a full hour."
"You didn't have to hang up Athena, I was only coming to ask how long you would be."
"Did you need something?" I asked, unable to keep the bitter edge of sarcasm out of my tone. To be unable to leave your captive alone for so much as an hour had to be some sort of record for clingiest kidnapper alive.
"I have some free time right now, we can go shopping if you'd like." He said, settling down on my bed with only a hand width of space between him and my crossed legs. I pulled them up close to my chest, eyeing him uneasily. It was alarming how much larger he was than me even while sitting. Werewolves were bigger than humans in general but Alphas were beasts. The beast that had taken me looked to be even larger than Alpha Russel had been.
"For what?" I asked, he had already gotten me clothes, and the kitchen was always somehow fully stocked as though some little wolf elves snuck in at night with groceries.
"Just grab some stuff for yourself, if you want any clothes, any snacks. I know you don't like my collection of books all that much, we can go to a bookstore. I'll clear a shelf in my office for you."
"You're willing to take me outside?" I asked sceptically.
Thus far he had never let me out in public where I could be seen by his pack, or let any of his pack members in the house. As far as I knew from my pack wolves were always flittering in and out of the Alpha's house for one thing or another.
"You're not a prisoner, of course I am. I think you know better than to run by now."
I didn't dignify his words with a response. It seemed no matter how much he tried to get on my good side he was unable to drop the condescension.
"So would you like to go?" He asked.
"All your books do suck." I said unthinkingly, surprised when I heard him let out a huff of a laugh in response making me jerk my head up to look at him.
"Then get ready, let's go get you some books that don't suck." He repeated back to me as he stood up, emphasizing my words with a crooked grin.
I turned my head away, looking back down to the bed, alarmed that such a horrific individual could have a dimple. It popped up low in his cheek closer to his mouth, so deep it was discernible amidst the dark stubble on his tan face. Whiskey eyes twinkling down at me with mirth as though we were friends.
I showered quickly and got dressed in a sweater and jeans to keep me warm since we were well into autumn and the temperature dropped even during the day. It felt strange walking out of the room, the rest of the house unfamiliar after weeks of spending all my time within that room again.
"Are you ready?" Came his voice from just ahead as he walked out of his office, adjusting the collar of the white dress shirt he wore. I nodded in response, walking past him to the stairs and speeding up as I felt him following me so closely I could feel the heat emanating off his skin. The hairs on the back of my nape stood up at the feeling of him towering over me, reminding me eerily of the videos Nora had shown me of bear attacks.
