played like a guitar

amber freeman was an average teenage girl. she had her ups and downs with different loves, different friends, different music, different styles; she was just like any other teenager in this day and age.

she had crushes, she had fights with her parents, she had arguments with friends, laughs, but... her love life was different.

her love life was draining, and exhausting. any time anyone would bring up amber's once love, she was immediately down again. she didn't like thinking about it that much.

it honestly baffled her that something that once brought her so much joy, could bring her so much pain and agony, but here she was. living and breathing with a dark cloud over her head with tara's name on it.

amber and tara were happy for a while. when it was just them... oh, amber was the happiest. she loved tara more than she could ever imagine...but tara? she didn't know if she loved amber.

and that hurt. it was constantly amber trying to change herself because she thought it was her looks, and trying to change her personality- essentially trying to change everything about herself all because she wanted tara to love her back.

she wanted tara to love her the way amber loved tara, but it seemed no matter what she did, nothing worked.

it only got worse because tara didn't like them being all couple-y in public either. she didn't want amber telling anyone they were dating, and she didn't want them holding hands, or hugging, or just doing normal couple-y stuff.

"we can't be all... annoying and stuff at school, okay? i'm... wes is still not over me and i don't want to hurt him."

amber stared for a moment, but eventually she sighed and agreed. she didn't know why tara was even worried about her ex-boyfriend, but amber didn't question it. she trusted tara.

amber felt like she had to prove something to everyone. prove that she was a good girlfriend, and that she was better than wes. that tara didn't need wes anymore now that she had amber. but that was really draining, both mentally and physically.

constantly trying to do stuff for tara, like getting her flowers, or buying her things, or just even spending more time with her; she tried absolutely everything.

but it seemed nothing was enough. and soon, amber's friends even caught on.

"amber, you can't be the one putting in all the work. like sometimes it doesn't even feel like tara's into you. like at all." always brutally honest, mindy sighed.

"wow thanks mindy." amber rolled her eyes, playing with the bracelet around her wrist. "we're fine."

"fine like...fine, or fine like, she's sitting with her ex boyfriend instead of you because you did something."

amber looked around quickly to see, and then she saw it. tara getting all cuddled up with wes on a bench. she looked down, fidgeting with her bracelet more, as she turned back to mindy. "she doesn't want to be like...out i guess. she's not ready."

mindy huffed. "look, from an outsiders point of view, i think you should dump her."

amber didn't respond.

even if everyone thought it was bad, amber didn't think so. she thought her and tara's private moments were enough for them. they didn't have to be all annoying and couple-y at school, but at home, when it was just them, it was perfect. well, she thought it was.

her definition of "perfect" was different from other people's definition.

"amber i'm really hot. can you get off of me." tara huffed, pushing amber away from her. "like i don't want to cuddle all the time."

"...okay." amber moved slightly away from tara, on the edge. she watched as tara typed away on her phone, completely unbothered. she got off the bed. "it's actually getting kind of late anyway, i should probably get home."

"i thought you were spending the night?" tara finally looked at her.

it was then amber realized she had already changed into her pajamas. "right." she sat back down on the bed and got under the covers. she curled up on the edge of the bed, facing away from tara, and closed her eyes.

-

the next morning, amber woke up with tara spooning her from behind, and she smiled.

and that's how it was for a few months. "perfect."

amber was so blinded by love she didn't even realize tara pulling away from her. well, tara had always been very distant since they first got together, so amber didn't think of it as anything, but then it happened.

the worst period of amber's life ever.

amber usually didn't look through tara's phone. she didn't think she needed to, and she trusted tara. plus, she didn't want to seem like some weird paranoid girlfriend, so she never asked about it.

but one day, while amber was laying in tara's bed, waiting for her love to come back, her phone wouldn't stop buzzing. the text tone rang through the room over and over, and soon amber just got tired of it, and picked up the damn thing.

wes: c'mon tara
wes: answer pls
wes: r u coming over or not?
wes: baby?
wes: are you okay

furrowing her eyebrows, she opened the phone, knowing tara's password was her birthday, and looked through the messages.

tara: i might be able to come over today
tara: moms out for like a month and no one's coming over here

wes: really??
wes: sweet. we haven't been able to spend a lot of time with each other
wes: do you think maybe we could have some fun?

tara: maybe ;)
tara: i love you

wes: i love you too

amber actually felt tears forming in her eyes. she promised herself she would never cry over a girl, but... this was just...

she was heartbroken. she really thought tara at least liked her back but now? she's been seeing wes the whole time tara was with her?

did tara ever mean anything she has ever told amber?

the "i think i'm falling in love with you," or the future plans together, it was all fake?

tara came back into the room, and amber threw the phone on the bed making her stop. "everything...okay?"

"no. you've been seeing wes this whole time behind my back?" amber asked her, wiping away the tears on her cheeks.

"what? what are you talking about?" tara furrowed her eyebrows.

"i saw the messages on your phone." it felt shitty coming out of amber's mouth; she didn't exactly enjoy going through tara's phone, especially without permission, but she had no choice. "you guys literally said, "I love you." you don't even say that to me! the person you're currently seeing!"

"because amber. i don't love you." tara snapped. "i haven't! i don't even like you! it was all some stupid dare to see how long i could drag you along until you realized it!"

amber stopped. did... did she hear that right?

before tara could say anything else, amber grabbed her shit and left. she felt humiliated, and honestly just felt so horrible about herself.

tara never liked her...

the night consisted of amber crying, and honestly just throwing a pity party for herself, with herself.

the weeks from that horrid day, amber could barely get out of bed to go to school. she didn't want to have to face tara and all her friends, and how they laughed at her everytime she walked past. she didn't want to see wes, with his dumb smirk on his face, and she didn't want everyone feeling bad for her because she got played.

she got played like a stupid guitar, and she easily let tara do it.

amber closed herself off more than she already was, pushed away everyone, and she never let another girl near her heart ever again.

and it will probably stay like that.
