Summary: Legolas has been feeling down and Thranduil doesn't know how to help but then an elf, Y/n, turns up and helps him find his smile again - which Thranduil quickly picks up on...Thranduil was concerned for his son's wellbeing, his mood seemed to be at an unusual low lately. However, this had happened before so Thranduil had expected it would pass quickly, meaning he tried not to to smother his son and allowed him as much space as he needed. But as time passed, Legolas' mood remained the same, so he decided that he must get to the bottom of it and help his son in any way he could - with the rest of Mirkwood watching out for Legolas and trying to find different ways to make the young price smile.
The Elven King spent several months searching for anything to help but never lost his hope when he came up empty each time. The chefs in the kitchen created many luscious treats for Legolas, which he did enjoy, but didn't lift his mood as Thranduil had hoped; many warm and bubbly baths were made for him, which he got lost in because they felt like heaven, but still his smile never went back to what it used to be.
There had been some disagreements during this time which lead to the elves of Mirkwood being on high alert. When things continued to escalate, Thranduil had summoned his council and they quickly agreed on a plan of action - they decided to call in some reinforcements. In particular, a very powerful reinforcement that could save Mirkwood and change the course of the impending war.
On a warm summers day, King and Prince were sat at their long dinner table - Thranduil was at his usual place head of the table and Legolas was sat at his left - both enjoying their lunch in a comfortable silence: the only noise coming from the busy servants in the kitchen as they prepared the next course of the meal. Thranduil looked over to his son, and watched him carefully chop his meal into smaller pieces and then bring it up to his mouth. It seemed like he had to put effort into eating it, his chews were slow and looked weak - like he was struggling to eat. The king wanted to say something to provide comfort but, in fear that saying something would cause Legolas to feel uncomfortable or push him away, he remained quiet and instead kept an eye on him.
Even though Legolas was looking his plate, he felt his father's eyes on him. He knew that his father only wanted to help him and was concerned about his behaviour lately, but a part of him felt like he was disappointing his father. This always nagged at the back of his mind and he could never seem to shake the feeling. Therefore, he thought it best that he didn't meet his father's eyes when he spoke.
"Ada, I have noticed you have been watching me lately. Have I done something?" He tried to keep his voice calm and steady and straightened his back: he was nervous for the response.
Thranduil wanted to reach his hand over to Legolas' and provide him with some physical comfort, but he resisted, it wasn't the best thing to do in that moment. Instead, he placed his utensils down onto the table and straightened his posture. His right hand moved to his chin and he spoke clearly and slowly, his eyes still on Legolas. "You haven't done anything."
Legolas also put his utensils on the table and tensed his arms, still looking at his plate. "Then why are you acting like I have."
"I have been concerned about you, Legolas." At this, the prince finally looked up from his plate and turned towards Thranduil. He was about to speak when some guards came into the room. They bowed and one of them spoke, "My king," he nodded at Legolas, "My prince. They have arrived."
They both nodded back and rose from their seats, smoothing their robes to get rid of any creases or crumbs hiding within them. Legolas waited for Thranduil to pass him and then followed him and the guards towards the throne room.
