I looked at my calendar on my laptop for this year. Classes are starting soon, I thought, and I'd probably still be homeschooled for this academic year.
I sighed.
This isn't anything I planned for my teenage years. All I wanted was to hangout with my friends, even though I don't have one, except for my cousin Winona, and my yaya's. I just wanted to be normal, a normal 15-year-old girl who goes to school and just live the life my 7-year-old self would've wanted.
My parents sheltered me my whole life from everything. Mommy said that outside was a dangerous place, and didn't let me go out often. Everytime lalabas ako ng bahay, I needed someone to be with. It's either my Yaya Eva or our driver Kuya Luis. She said that she's doing this for my safety and that it was for the better, But for God's sake! I wasn't some royal princess like Rapunzel that needs to be locked in a tower and has magical long blonde hair that has magical powers!
I heard someone knock at my door. "Ma'am, nandito na po sila Ma'am Yvonne at Sir Reggie," I saw Ate Lina holding her pink feather duster by the doorstep. "Baba na daw po kayo sabi ni Manang Alice dahil ihahanda na po yung hapunan." I nodded. "Okay Ate, susunod nalang po ako." I gave her a small smile. After that, she left my room.
I really do envy kids who get to go to school, I mean- I do too, but I'm homeschooled. Sabi pa ni Winona na 'swerte' daw ako, since I didn't have to bear rowdy and noisy classmates. To be honest, I wouldn't mind that! I'm sick of how quiet this house is. Both of my parents are mostly at meetings, photoshoots, interviews, premiers, so they didn't have enough time to be here at home with me, so I grew up most of my life with my yaya's.
I read articles about my parents and me, about how people are curious about the unica hija of the hottest action star Reggie Elizalde and 80's sweetheart Yvonne Gomez, why I didn't have any publicity like other celebrities' kids and why didn't I followed my parent's footsteps on joining the showbiz business. I even saw a conversation on twitter suspecting that I wasn't actually my father's daughter, kaya daw hindi ako masyadong nakikita ng media. I don't get why people are like that, how can they say those things when they don't even know us personally?
As I entered the dining room, I immediately went to my parent's to kiss their cheeks. After that I sat on my seat.
"So how's your tennis practice, Connie?" Dad asked.
"It was fine. I worked on my serves today." I replied. I started playing tennis 3 months ago. My interest in tennis grew when I watched Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams' Wimbledon finals match from 2004. Those two women are the reason why I fell in love with tennis.
I was shocked when Mommy agreed when I asked her if I can take Tennis lessons for the summer. Maybe she pitied me since I was stuck here most of the year, and minsan lang naman ako manghingi from her.
After me and Dad's conversation, the atmosphere in the room grew tense.
I looked at Mommy and she caught me and gave me a glance. "May sasabihin ka ba?"
I wiped my face with the table napkin and cleared my throat.
"Mom, I know you already said 'no' last time but, can you please let me study in a school already? like, a real school. I'm about to be a freshman in high school," I said softly and looked at her and Dad with pleading eyes. "I want something new—a fresh start! I promise, I will do well."
My heart was pounding because of nervousness. I can't read Mommy's face and thoughts. She was focused on cutting her steak. At this point, I felt defeated. I suppose I will never have a high school experience just like in movies and novels.
It has been 5 minutes and 12 seconds...
The atmosphere in the room grew tenser.
"Anak, alam mo naman na—"
"Fine. If that's what you wanted, then sure. Nasa tamang edad ka na rin naman. You know what's wrong and what's right." Mommy said and gave me a small smile.
My face brightened up as I heard Mommy, I immediately stood up and went to her and gave her a hug. My heart felt like it's bursting because of joy. I felt her kiss my temple. "Thank you Mommy! I love you!" I've never been happy like this before. It felt like christmas. "We'll talk about this tomorrow. Now, finish your food first and after that mag half-bath ka na." She commanded. I finished my food with a happy heart.
I went back to my room with a smile on my face. 7-year-old me would be so proud.
