[It was a warm July night in Ohio. The sun was sinking, birds were flying towards it, and folks who had been outside were fleeing to their homes.

A small girl, no more than 9 years old, was among the crowd. Something was strange in the pit of her stomach as she walked home from a friend's house. Everything seemed to be in order, so what could possibly go wrong?

     Well, let me tell you.

When she returned home, she discovered smoke streaming from her home. Along with cars and people, there were red and blue lights everywhere. Many people were gathered around it, talking about the catastrophe.

When she looked around for her parents, she noticed that her neighbours were staring at her with sympathetic expressions.

     That was something she despised.

It was then that she realised where she was that she realised where her parents were. She dashed up to the house but was stopped by a police officer. "NOOO! MAMA! PAPA!" she yelled at the top of her lungs.

Others felt pity for her when they watched her scream and suffer. They felt sorry for her for having to live without her parents and for having to go through such a terrible loss at such a young age.

"Come on honey, let's get you somewhere else," the officer said. She stated this in an attempt to quiet the wailing girl.

"No! That's my mother and father!" With a sniff, she said. Her eyes were so red from crying that she didn't even have a tear fall out of them anymore.

"Look sweetheart, we have to ca—"

"I'll take her with me," a voice from behind remarked abruptly. When they turned around to see who it was, they saw a tall, slender man with curly hair and a long black coat standing behind them.

"Look, unless you're a family member, I can't just let you take her," the officer said after a long look. She knelt, now face to face with the child, and questioned, "What's your name, by the way? Do you have any other relatives? Is there anyone from out of state?"

With a shake of her head, the girl turned to face the man. She'd seen him a million times before. He was a family friend who had frequently assisted them with their constant relocating.

The cop sighed before returning her gaze to the man, then to the girl she was holding. "Do you know who this guy is?" she searched, and the girl nodded. "All right," she said again as she rose up and came up to him. "For the time being, you are free to take her. We'll check in on her tomorrow or later to see how you deal with her "she replied, her voice calm.

The small girl was now holding his hand, but she was still staring at the burnt-out house that the firemen had already put out, while the guy and officer claimed something was missing, such as his address, and that his home might need an inspection before anything major occurred.

"Michelle, please. We'll return to my place and talk about everything there," as he started to drive her to his house, the man remarked. He knew she didn't have any other relatives, so as Hai's only friend, he had to take after her.

The young lady was shown to a plain and simple guest room. They both knew they wouldn't be staying there for long, as they had in every other place they'd visited]
