"Are you two ready to go?!" Michael's mother sung out,
"What? What does she mean?" Evie asked, confused.
"Guess where I'm taking you?!" Michael grinned,
"Um..."
"We're going to a family reunion- and you're coming!" He exclaimed.
"Oh what- oh my god!" Evie was pleasantly surprised.
The reunion...
The venue was an old farm, probably forty minutes out of town, with a homely two storey building built upon it as the centrepoint of the farmstead. It was many acres wide and upon the farm lived a flock of sheep, but not much else, as the couple who lived there were quite old. Michael had a motorbike, and he decided that was how they would get there. If Evie had to describe the trip she would say it was possibly the most exhilarating and the most fear- inducing experience of her entire life, all in one.
When they arrived they parked the bike next to the other six motorcycles outside the farm house. apparently alot of people in his family rode them. His parents pulled up in a car, but he mentioned that they also had bikes.
"Okay, leave the helmet here, we'll go into the loungeroom first, my grandma will want to meet you." Michael smiled, placing his own helmet on one of the handlebars. Evie sat her's on the seat and began to walk with Michael towards the house.
"So how do you like motorcycles?"
"They're really scary." Evie laughed nervously. Once they got inside and had been cooed at by Michael's grandma, they were redirected outside to the backyard, where there was a barbecue with sausages and other meat sizzling on the grill. There was enough children to form two and a half football teams, aged from probably between three and eight, and they were all playing on the lawn together, and was even more adults then children. The adults, however, were standing around chatting or being sensible in general the way adults always do.
The whole thing went down slowly and somewhat uneventfully, and by the end Evie was pretty sure she'd met everyone. They were served a barbecued dinner with salad or potato bake on the side.
There was one old guy that was rather strict and kept shouting at the kids, telling them not to eat so much candy and stop running around, but once he was drunk near the end of the night, he was dancing around and slurrily shouting along to the aussie rock band blaring out of the stereo and commenting on the size of Michael's cousin's girlfriend's tits. The girl was a short 5'5" with dark, nearly black hair and bright green eyes. She was actually pretty cool. She could play guitar okay and owned a really nice looking purple electric, and had her hair teased and wore a black and red bandana instead of a headband. She loved rock, especially hard rock. Evie and Michael spend an ample amount of the night just hanging around those two. Michael's cousin was almost as tall as him and also played guitar. He had a good sense of humour and was very nice. It was immeadiately obvious that he and his girlfriend were made for one another. Michael's grandma had three labrador retrievers, whom she adored. Michael introduced her to them. He put his arms around one, lifted it up into the air and said with a smile
"Here's missy," the dog didn't even struggle, it wagged its tail, in fact. Another of the dogs put its paws up on Michael. He put her down and placed a hand on the other dog's white head,
"Bub." And he pointed at the last dog, chasing its tail a stone's throw from them
"That's Buzzer."
After dinner, Michael's grandma showed off pictures of Michael when he was a toddler and baby, all out embarrassing him. Evie thought they were amusing but also thought he was cute in that way little kids are.
At one point, one of the very young relatives got stung by a bee and began to cry. There weren't many adults around, and he was just metres from Evie and Michael. Evie quickly excused herself, went over and picked him up gently,
"Hey, what happened?" She asked softly,
"I got an ouchie!" He exclaimed loudly through his tears. Evie took him inside to Michael's grandma and she helped remove the beesting.
"You okay now?" Evie frowned down at him in sympathy,
"Kiss it better?" The tiny blonde boy asked, his blue eyes wide , he stuck out his bottom lip in a pout. It was adorable. Evie chuckled and leaned down to kiss his arm, where the sting had been. He grinned and threw his arms around her neck,
"Thankyou Mike-ee's girlfriend!" She giggled and said,
"That's okay- but call me Evie,"
"Okay Evie!" Then he scampered off to go play.
After the party, it was time to go home- on the motorbike- in the dark. Michael knew what he was doing but that didn't make it less scary. Once they finally got to his house and dismounted, Evie's legs shaking and heart pounding like a trapped animal attempting to escape the confines of her rib cage, Evie and Michael simply stumbled into Michael's room, fell beside one another on the bed and dozed off.
