chapter one

Charlotte Orion had returned to Matheson after a few years of being able to avoid this place. Her mother - Ashley - had warned her against returning. And just the small talks she had that were completely one-sided with her older sister's grave - one that said Peyton Orion - should have been enough to stop her from coming back.

So, when she realized exactly why she had been called back to Matheson, she instantly regretted the move.

She was unsure of what exactly was happening in the town but she could feel something surrounding them like pigs waiting to be slaughtered. Her jaw clenched subconsciously. Buzzing started to fill her ears. She wanted to scream. Her mind wandered to what her family would think about her return. She could almost hear Peyton telling her to turn back and act as if the pull in her stomach wasn't taking control over her; as if the infectious voices weren't causing her throat to close up.

Demons were trying to take control. The prophecy that includes a Banshee was coming true. It's something Ashley Orion had been keeping from Charlotte and now... now she didn't know it even existed.

The Orion girl puts the last of her boxes on her new bed. She runs a hand through her red hair, closing her eyes. She looks at the small pile of boxes, sighing to herself as she realizes that she doesn't actually have much.

In her defense, she's been told her entire life to keep it in a suitcase. She had gone a little over that rule but she also knew, if the time came, she could easily detach herself from many of the items in those boxes, only taking a suitcase worth.

"How are you settling in?"

She looks over at Joe Ridgeway and smiles. "Pretty well. I would need more things for it to be a problem."

"I agree," Joe says with a laugh. "I'm okay with it though. The less stuff you have to move in with, the less I feel bad for not helping."

"Trust me, you don't have to feel bad." In fact, it had only taken Charlotte a few minutes to take everything out of the car and into the house. "You're letting me stay here."

"I owe your mother," Joe says simply.

Charlotte bites her tongue as she thinks about the fact that if that's true, then Joe should be sending her home instead of letting her stay here. "Thank you, either way." She glances at the clock. "When does school here start?" When he tells her, she barely hears it, thinking about how she's going to be going back to school in a few hours and thinking about the whispers she's been hearing since arriving.

Maybe she'll learn about those too when she's at school. Not just useless subjects that occasionally cover things she'll need in life. She reads her texts from Zadie.

"Kinsey Locke has Scot wrapped around her finger," Charlotte reads them aloud, "and I think she's nice so far. Definitely something going on in that head of hers. She ran from the horror movie we were watching." The redhead frowns.
