Disclaimer: This takes place after Hori and Ishikawa meet Shindo for the first time. I also decided to have Shindo and Miyamura be on a first name basis more often. For the anime-only viewers confused by this, in the manga and webcomic they do sometimes refer to each other by their first names. Not too often, but Miyamura calls him Kouichi in serious moments.

On a hot summer day, a group of 4 girls spent their day cooling off in an air-conditioned cafe. They were enjoying their cold food, talking about various topics.
One of the girls brought up something that's been on many people's minds for quite some time now.
"Hey, I've always wondered about something."
"What is it?" asked one of her companions.
"How come Miyamura-kun's been hanging out a lot with Hori-san, Ishikawa-kun, and Yoshikawa-san lately?"
Ever since in the middle of their second year, Miyamura has been seen with Hori, Ishikawa, and Yoshikawa a lot. They were pretty much a group, sometimes even joined by Iura Shuu. This carried on over to their third year, with all of them turning down invites to hang out with their other friends outside their little group of four - sometimes five.
Many people found this odd, because the boy named Miyamura pretty much had no social standing. He was always seen as the gloomy, quiet kid, who never talks to people. Things have been different nowadays, and he can sometimes be seen smiling when he's with HOri and the others.
"Who knows?" said one of her friends.
"It's so weird. Like, I just didn't think that Miyamura of all people would end up hanging out with the likes of Hori-san."
"Yeah, it is odd."
"Do you think their dating?"
As absurd as it is for them to hear that, it's been something that's been on people minds lately. Often times the pair would walk around school together, and even leave school together. The amount of times these have been happening have frequented as of late, and it wasn't unusual for both of them to be the central topic in conversations amongst their year.
While Ishikawa is Miyamura's closest male friend, Hori was his closest female friend, but even so, Miyamura can be seen with Hori more often than Ishikawa.
"No way right? I mean, would Hori really date someone like him?"
"There's no way. Friends is one thing, but dating is another."
"I could already imagine how much that would drag down Hori's social standing."
Hori was always popular amongst her peers, both within school, and even outside of it. Her good grades, good looks, and upbeat personality earned her a great reputation, and it wasn't uncommon for guys from her school and outside to ask her out.
Though she was often asked out by many guys, she never accepted any of their confessions, not even from her friend Ishikawa, a popular jock who's part of her own friend circle. His rejection was well-known to many people. For her to turn someone down like him, and to see her go out with Miyamura would tarnish the reputation she's built up for herself.
"The dating thing aside, I wonder what made them want to hang out with him?"
"Yeah, I couldn't really imagine Miyamura-kun being an outgoing person."
"Maybe out of pity? I mean the guy was always alone before he started hanging out with them?"
"Perhaps, but I get the feeling they aren't forcing themselves."
