That was another typical autumn night. It was after eleven when her car broke down and got stuck on the road back home. His only company that hour were the moon and stars that bathed the sky, and of course, some hungry creatures of the forest.
Thanks to the dense fog that covered her surroundings, even with her magnified vision the blonde couldn't see more than a few feet away from where she was. Huffing in frustration, she opens the hood of the car as she fails once again to call a tow truck. With the help of the phone's flashlight, she tries to find the problem in the vehicle, getting more nervous by the minute that she finds nothing but perfect .
- But what the hell! - he vents, while with his right foot he kicked the front tire of the car, in a foolish attempt to relieve his anger.
Defeated, she closes the hood again, and just before getting into the vehicle, her senses catch a light a few feet away. Turning her face toward the fountain, she nearly punches the air in celebration, anxiously watching a black BMW approach her.
When the driver rolled down the tinted window to look at her, Caroline felt speechless for a moment. In front of her was one of the most handsome men she had ever seen in her short life.
- Lost on the road, love? - He questioned with a strong British accent, which shuddered to the most remote parts of the blonde's body.
He smiled discreetly as he watched the body of the woman in front of him shiver, just at the sound of his voice. Her attempt to hide her smile failed, and upon noticing the stranger's slightly smug expression, she pulled herself together, ready to dismiss him:
- The engine died while I was driving back home - she explained briefly.
- What an inconvenience... - he commented - Where were you going?
- Mystic Falls.
Apparently, that trip just got more interesting.
- But what a coincidence...Maybe this is your lucky day, love - he replied before making his proposal - I'm also going to the city. I have some...- he paused for a second to choose his words - business, pending there. I could give you a ride to a gas station or something.
Caroline pondered her proposal for a moment. It was a few minutes to midnight, and even if she was a vampire, being alone in the middle of the road at that hour didn't seem reasonable. On the other hand, accepting an invitation from a complete stranger wasn't much safer either, and even so, she didn't have to think too much before making a decision:
- That would be too... - she paused, analyzing the proposal - helpful, of her part.
- Then? - unlocking the passenger door, he continued - Can we go?
