After 15 days Mrs. Sobti came back. We were afraid that she would push her out as she was very fondly called Danda aunty. Her shrilling voice and aloof nature were characteristic of her nature. None of us ever dared to request her either for buying our school fair ticket or for plucking a few flowers for Durga puja during Navratri.
I was roaming the street ahead of her home..trying to cook up a story for Gipsey's new home. As she entered, she saw Gipsey wagging her tail. On seeing Mrs. Sobti went to sniff her and took rounds of her. Instead of barking at her, she started being playful with her. Mrs. Sobti stood spellbound. I thought she would surely throw her out. But then Gipsey leaped and killed a mouse and then ran after a cat and showed her away. At the same time, a beggar came in front of the house and Gipsey barked loudly and pushed him away. At this Mrs. Sobti kept her luggage down. And sat down and started patting Gipsey lovingly. She opened her house and brought her water and some meat chunks. I was surprised to see this. When she saw me and my friends outside, she called us and enquired about Gipsey. We presented a cooked-up story that she is a pet of an army soldier who left her while going on her next transfer. And that she has no one and nowhere to go. She is alone in this world and has found refuge in her open courtyard. None of us can keep her as all of us are pure vegetarians and she is a pure non-vegetarian! Somehow, Sobti aunty got a little attached to the newcomer. We told her that the soldier's uncle called her Gipsey and she is a two-month-old puppy. We further added that now it's her wish to provide her shelter to simply shoo this sweet lonely creature away into the world filled with betrayals. As it is she has already faced the brunt of harsh separation from her mother just after her birth and then another betrayal from the soldier uncle who proceeded while leaving her alone here. Aunty was seemingly mellowed down and picked her up affectionately. Now we were confirmed that Gipsey has got her homestay confirmed.
