She made us see the kind and compassionate side of a loner and an aloof single lady in the Indian society. Mrs. Sobti was probably tagged as a divorcee, a characterless lady just because she left her husband's home as well as her parents, so as to live her life on her own terms and conditions. Perhaps, then the lady of substance was not acceptable by our society. But is it accepted even today? She had the courage, even back then to rear up a stray dog as her pet...along with nurturing a cordial and loving relationship with all the kids of our society as a group. She actually had won our hearts.
The dog's company was actually needed for us and not for her to realize the real essence of human nature apart from curtains of societal tags. She taught us that motherly love is needed by all creatures...just as we call mother nature! She never kept our balls before Gipsey's arrival too. But yes her sharp tones and mystic aloofness of unparalleled uncanny commonness in the society used to keep us away from her. At home too, we used to listen to different derogatory remarks about her. For us, she was a mystery and we, kids, were told not to interact with her. But, now, the common thread of Gipsey made us all come together. And we realized how wrong we were in our perceptions and assumptions.
Now we used to make aunty the referee of our matches. And Gipsey was our trained player.
