The Matthews and Maya had gone home. They had a nice dinner, and Maya went off to bed early after the long day she had.

Early the next morning, their phone had rang. It was Officer Reid calling about Maya's case.

"Last night, Michael Nelson and Katy Clutterbucket were brought in for questioning. Michael is denying all allegations and Katy is refusing to cooperate," he spoke over the phone.

"So what does this mean for Maya's case?" Topanga asked.

"It means that if we don't have evidence of a crime, we're going to have to release them."

"But what about the marks and bruises all over Maya? You saw them yourself."

"He's saying that Maya's a violent kid who gets into fights on the street all the time. We just don't have the evidence, so we're going to have to cut them loose."

"Wait, don't let them go yet. Let me speak with the mother," Topanga pleaded.

"You have 20 minutes to get down here and talk with her," he said after a long pause.

"Thank you so much," Topanga hung up the phone and darted out the door.

Topanga was ushered into a back room where the blonde waitress she had met the other day was sitting.

"I know what you must be thinking, Topanga."

"And what's that?" Topanga calmly took a seat across from Katy.

"That I'm a terrible person, a terrible mother. But I did the best I could with what I had. I was 20 years old, raising a 5-year-old girl by myself after her father left us."

"I'm not here to judge you on the hardships of your past, Katy. I'm here to plead with you to do right by your daughter now."

"What?"

"You're husband is denying all allegations. They need a witness or else Mike's going to walk. Maya said you witnessed the assaults firsthand."

"Yes, I did," Katy was ashamed.

"Tell the truth then."

"Won't that make me an accessory to a crime?"

"That's not something for me to determine, but it has that potential. Regardless, do this for your daughter. She's suffered enough throughout her whole life."

"Time's up," an officer opened the door and escorted Topanga out.

Topanga let out a deep breath and went back home. Within an hour the phone rang. Topanga answered it as the rest of the family was sitting down eating breakfast.

Maya could see Topanga nodding her head a lot, giving one word replies, and a final 'thank you' before she hung up.

"Who was it?" Maya asked.

"That was Officer Reid. Your mom's cooperating. She told them everything."

"Oh my gosh," Maya let out relieved.

"Your case has to go to trial, but they won't ever hurt you again."

"If they're both away where will I live?" Maya asked panicked. "My father's not around and-"

"Honey, you can stay here. You'll always have a home with us."
