Maya woke up in her bed beside Riley's. She looked at the clock that read 9:48 and then over at Riley's bed, already made without a trace of the girl.
She laid back down with a thud and a deep exhale before willing herself out of bed. She dreaded coming face to face with him again.
She walked into the kitchen and saw Riley sitting at the table. She had a bowl of cereal in front of her and she was scrolling through her phone.
"Where's Josh?" Maya noticed the vacant couch.
"He went back to his dorm early this morning," Riley didn't even look up from her screen.
That shocked Maya. Sure, she had told him they couldn't be together, but was she so harsh that he felt he had to leave?
"Did he say anything to you before he left?" she asked hopefully.
"He mumbled something about how he couldn't believe he wasted all this time on someone who wouldn't love him back. You two literally met a day ago," Riley turned her widened eyes to Maya. "I think he's overreacting a bit."
"I only pushed him away because I didn't want to completely destroy him."
"Nevermind, it's both of you being dramatic," Riley went back to looking at her phone.
"This isn't a joke, Riley," Maya let out frustratedly.
"Well what do you want me to say? You barely knew each other and you're acting like it's the end of the world."
Maya was about to respond before she quickly restrained herself. She had a pained and desperate expression on her face. She anxiously paced around, Riley's eyes following her every movement.
"If I tell you something, will you promise to keep it a secret?" she stopped pacing.
Riley raised an eyebrow questioningly but nodded her head.
"Josh and I didn't meet last night, we met at a party a couple weeks ago."
"You and Josh met a few weeks ago at a party?" Riley's jaw nearly dropped to the floor.
"Shh, you promised," Maya looked around for signs of Cory or Topanga. "I went to an NYU party and we bumped into each other."
"And?" Riley urged her to continue.
"And we'd had a few drinks and we messed around a little," she reluctantly revealed.
"Bleh," Riley made a gagging noise at the thought.
"It's not like I did it on purpose, he never told me his name."
While that was a seemingly valid defense, it didn't ease Riley's discomfort at all.
"Please, don't get involved," Maya begged. "I know it might upset you but-"
"I'm not upset, I'm grossed out," she made it clear to Maya. "So much so that I'm going to pretend I heard nothing about you hooking up with Josh."
"What?" Topanga stood in the doorway of the kitchen.
The girls sat frozen. Topang glared back and forth between them. She soon turned her glare to her husband.
"Ahh!" he yelped. "I, I know nothing about this, Topanga," he stumbled on his words.
Her lips formed a calm smile. "Cory, call your brother. We are all going to have a chat."
