"W-what'd you just say?" Damian asked her, his eyes as wide as saucers

"W-what'd you just say?" Damian asked her, his eyes as wide as saucers.

"I said that I'll sit with you," Anya repeated herself, "unless... you don't want to?"

Anya used: PUPPY EYES- CRITICAL HIT.

"I guess you can," he huffed begrudgingly, unable to give her a direct 'no.'

Anya's eyes lit up and she gave him an enthusiastic smile. "Great! Let's pick out a seat, then."

Damian cast a glance over to Becky, expecting the girl to be fuming with rage over her best friend leaving her, but to his surprise she had a snarky grin on her lips. Suddenly he suspected that there was more to this than Anya purely just wanting to sit with him, but he shoved down those internal misgivings and picked a seat for them to share. The best seat to pick would probably be towards the middle of the rows directly in front of his friends. That way he would have some backup in case the two girls decided to pull a fast one on him.

"This one."

Anya strode excitedly over to the seat and plopped down with an enthusiastic expression gracing her features.

Hesitantly setting his stuff down beside hers, Damian sat down, casting side glances at her every few seconds to admire- I mean, to check that she wasn't doing anything evil. Yeah, that was it.

"Sy-on kid, how was your break?" Anya asked him out of the blue, causing him to almost jump out of his seat at the unexpected icebreaker coming from the commoner.

"I did lots of cool things," Damian replied, "like going to fancy restaurants, going outside, spending time with people, indulging myself as I please... you know, the usual things for someone as amazing as myself."

She nodded, turning her face over so that her green eyes were practically searing through his skull. "That sounds like it's a lot of fun. I'm glad that things went so smoothly for you over break."

"Ah, yeah," he said, feeling awkward. In these sorts of conversations he was supposed to reciprocate the question, right? "How about you?"

Eyes lighting up like firecrackers on the fourth of July, Anya began to speak. "My break was so much fun! I went out with my parents and we did tons of activities that I'd never done before. I had a peanut cookie and it was one of the best desserts ever- if only I had known earlier that they existed, I would've asked Mama to get one every time she went to get groceries. I also got to hang out with Becky and Bond, where we also beat up some old guys. After that-"

"Everyone listen up!"

Their teacher clapped his hands together, signaling the end of Anya's extended report on her summer vacation. With a mix of relief and disappointment Damian turned his full attention to the class, forcing the lingering thoughts of his seatmate to the back of his mind.

The class went by agonizingly slowly. The teacher gave them the syllabus for the year with the instructions for them to read it along with a long drawl on the rules of classwork. Damian tried his best to still his pounding heart and ignore that the commoner had come approximately three inches closer to him than before. The shrimp looked like she was falling asleep every few minutes only to perk up and focus on the teacher once more. She had her notebook out with a pencil and was occasionally sketching down some notes. He decided not to comment on the fact that it wasn't necessary to take notes when all of the information was already written down in the syllabus. There wasn't any point as it would surely go through one ear and out the other.

"Sy-on- I mean, uh..." Anya fumbled for words as she eyed Damian nervously. "Do you want to have lunch together?"

LUNCH?!!

Damian felt heat rise to his cheeks as he imagined eating with the girl. Maybe he would even feed her, that would be cu- I mean horrible! There's no way that I'm giving a chance for that to happen.

"No way."

"Ah," Anya frowned and then shrugged. "What else can you expect? Jenny is in a different lunch for me, so I was just asking you because of that. I'm sorry if it inconvenienced you."

Anya strategically guilt-tripped Damian, making sure to let her pink hair fall over her face to give a defeated appearance. She had mastered the art of bribing people into doing and getting things for her, so he would clearly be no exception.

"Is there no one else you can eat with...?" he sighed. "I can't just eat lunch with you. I'm sure you're aware of what kind of rumors would startup if I were to do so. It's not worth risking my reputation."

"If your reputation wasn't in the way, would you do it?" Anya boldly inquired, her eyes meeting his as a small smile crept onto her face. "It's not like we've never spent time alone together, right? Remember when we held hands in the cave on the field-"

"We were SIX!" Damian replied a bit too loudly, causing a few heads to turn his way.

"Awh," Anya's smile fell. "I see, that's too bad."

Where and when did she learn to be this bold?!

She stood up, brushing imaginary dust off of her skirt. "If you want to, I'll be waiting in this classroom. I already checked and there are no classes going on. We won't get in trouble if we don't get found out, right?"

"Absolutely not," he immediately dismissed the idea. "I can't risk the possibility of getting in trouble."

"I'll take the blame for it," she countered him, "if that's your main issue with the idea, then it can be easily solved."

"Fine... but could we wait a few days? I really would prefer not to do it on the first day of school."
He was simply doing this because he was obligated to. There was absolutely nothing else that had to be said about the situation as it was all business. That was it. It was.

His heart was simply pounding due to adrenaline from the first day of school. That was all.
