When Anya woke up she found that there was something warm draped around her. Rubbing her eyes and looking around, she was met with unfamiliar forest terrain. Oh, that's right...
A jacket was wrapped around her shoulders and the familiar silhouette of Damian Desmond towered in front of her.
"You finally woke up," he sighed, "we have to get going. Immediately."
"Are we still lost?" Anya brushed some dirt off her leggings and stood up.
"No, I know the exact coordinates of the exit and can take us there immediately," Damian spat sarcastically. "If we hadn't run out in such a randomized fashion then we most certainly wouldn't be stuck here in the middle of nowhere."
Anya shrank back guiltily. She knew that she had been the one to get them both in this mess, and Damian had done nothing wrong. Because she had dragged him along this far out they were now pretty much stranded in the woods where there could potentially be dangers lurking in every bush. Damian had noticeable dark circles on his eyes (which she could infer was from a lack of sleep). "I'm sorry," she murmured, "if you want, I can carry you today since you carried me yesterday."
His eyebrows furrowed in complete confusion and distaste. "No thank you. It's improper for a woman to have to hoist a man around, especially since we're 'dating.'"
Anya scoured her mind for any sort of idea that would help them get out of the woods. Suddenly, the perfect solution came to mind. "I could climb a tree!"
For the first time in this whole excursion, Damian seemed to be considering her idea. He thought to himself for only a few seconds before nodding. "That's really all that can be done in this circumstance—at least there's nothing else I can think of. We don't have anything that we can use to release a signal to people let alone contact them." He ran a hand through his hair absent-mindedly as if he were imagining the hell they would have to go through once they got back. "I hope that this won't affect my academics."
"It's okay," Anya gave him a thumbs-up and a flash of the 'Anya Forger Smile' before walking over to the sturdiest tree in the area. "If we do get in trouble, I'll take the blame for it."
Damian stared at her as if she was a completely different person as she began to head up the trees. His thoughts were so loud that she couldn't ignore them. Her? Cover for me? There's no way she would have the sort of compassion to do such a thing.
Looking back on her past actions, Anya could sort of see why he could've come to that conclusion. As she dragged herself upwards onto the first branch, Anya recalled the lessons she had with her mother teaching her how to escape in several situations—one of which had been if she was being chased by bad guys in the woods.
Who knew that the extremely specific lesson would come to use in a real-life situation? Anya reached for the next branch and pulled herself up with a heave, using her arms to hoist her above it and then reach a leg over the branch, using that as a leverage to bring the rest of her body up along with it.
"Uh, is it going okay?" Damian called out to her from down on the ground. She knew that he probably felt irritated at the fact that he had to stand on the ground while she did everything.
The 'Anya Forger Smile' came once again to wreak havoc. Heh. Seeing Sy-on boy from up high makes him look like an ant.
She quite enjoyed having the opportunity to look down on him for once rather than having to deal with him constantly looking down on her as if she were a repulsive insect.
What's she looking so smug for? Damian's grumpy thoughts rang out. It's sorta ador—annoying. Annoying. I meant annoying. How is my brain messing up the second syllable of such a common word?
Anya decided to stop paying attention to him and continue her ascent up the tree. She only had a few branches left to go until she would be able to break through the canopy of leaves and see the exit to the forest.
Finally, she reached the top. Sticking her head out through the leaves, she was met with a vibrant blue sky. Anya took a moment to revel in its beauty before surveying the area.
Trees north, trees south, trees east... building west! She let out an audible 'whew' before turning back to tell Damian the news.
"WEST! THE SCHOOL IS WEST!" Anya shouted at the top of her lungs with excitement.
"OKAY. NO NEED TO BROADCAST THAT TO THE ENTIRE WOODS." Damian retorted.
Rolling her eyes, Anya descended the tree for a few minutes before she finally reached the forest floor again. When her feet hit the leafy ground, Damian walked over to her.
"Look at you, you have so many leaves in your hair," he sighed and reached out, gently picking each of them out. "You looked like a squirrel climbing the tree so fast."
"Thanks...?" Anya replied, unsure if that was supposed to be a satirical remark or just him sucking at giving compliments. "Anway, we should head back as soon as possible."
"Your hair's a mess," he ignored her and continued plucking out leaves. She could feel the brush of his fingertips against his scalp, tenderly and clumsily brushing through her pink hair in order to try to make her not appear as if she had just been rolling in the undergrowth all day. "There, done."
He stepped back looking proud of himself. Hah, I'm such a great boyfriend. Anya nodded shakily as his very self-centered thoughts filled her ears.
It's kinda cute that he's so proud of himself.
"Thank you," Anya grabbed his wrist and dragged him along with her towards the school. "Now, let's embark!"
"That wasn't the best usage of that word."
And, of course, Damian had to make a snarky remark.
Hey guys! I'm so sorry that this took like half a year to update :') I just lost motivation for it and didn't know what to do. Thankfully now I have regained some of my motivation, and am going to hopefully update this book more often. To be honest I sort of go in and out of my SpyxFamily phases.
