driving through somerville during the fall was your favourite. you loved driving through the city right before or after the rain at any time. currently it was 5:36 in the morning, the sun refused to peak through the semi-light clouds, giving the city a dark grey hue.

you had your phone plugged into the aux while the music played at a low hum, barely audible if you had been talking. you pulled into the sturniolo's driveway before sending your boyfriend a text.

you waited patiently, pulling the hood over your head and pulled down the sleeves of the hoodie you stole from matt, as blew warm air into your cupped hands, matt made his way out the door, smiling at you through the semi-fogged windows.

as he climbed into the passenger seat, you handed him one of the hot chocolates you bought from the local 24 hour cafe near your apartment. he graciously accepted the warm drink before leaning over the centre console and pressing a kiss to your lips.

"why couldn't you sleep?" you hummed, glancing at him as you turned to look out your back window, slowly backing out of the driveway.

"well i knew you'd be out and about at this time because it's fall and starting to get rainy all the time and you love driving around in this weather so i just stayed up, praying you'd text me." he laughed, making your face heat up as you took off down the street, sending him a warm smile as you stopped at a red light.

"you stayed up so you could see me even though you knew i'd be coming over later?" you laughed, pulling onto the highway leading to an overlook just outside the city.

"yeah. don't get me wrong, i love hanging out with you and my brothers but i like these moments where it's just you and me, yknow?" matt murmured, taking a sip of his hot chocolate before taking your hand in his.

"i get exactly what you mean. i love nick and chris, they're some of my best friends but i love when we can just be by ourselves." you replied, your smile only growing as the rain started pelting the car.

handing your phone to matt, he picked the music while you drove along the highway, another fifteen minutes until you guys made it to the overlook. the two of you either sat in silence or quietly sang along to matt's queue of songs. pulling up to the overlook, you sighed before getting out, squealing loudly as the rain pelted your skin through the hoodie you wore. matt followed suit, yelling loudly as he was soaked by the rain in seconds, even through the thick teddy hoodie he wore.

"why'd you wanna come here in the rain?" he yelled, his voice barely audible over the loud weather.

"because!" you giggled, pulling him toward you by the front of his hoodie, smiling when you saw the few pieces of his hair framing his face.

"so you just wanted to stand in the rain?"

"nooo-" you hummed, dragging out the "o" before yanking open your door and turning up the music, humming to yourself softly when yours and matt's song came on. the tune of dark red by steve lacy carried out of your car and over the rain.

the song became the anthem of your relationship when you two were in the middle of a late night drive, both of you trying to simmer the leftover lingering feelings from the argument you two had about fifteen minutes before the song started playing. you smiled softly as you listened to the words, noting that the lyrics uncannily resembled matt's anxious thoughts. you were aware that he often jumped to conclusions before he could catch up to this thoughts. after that, the two of you turned the song into something that resembled your relationship and how you'd two would do anything to stay with one another. despite being barely twenty years old, you both acknowledged that you were it for one another.

"-i came here to dance in the rain with you." you spoke as you made you way back to him, your arms wrapping gingerly around his shoulders as his encircled your waist, pulling you flush against his chest.

"baby, i love you but you're such a nerd. especially when it comes to romantic cliches and sappy shit." he laughed as he watched you sway back and forth with him, a smile on your face.

"what can i say matt? i'm a hopeless romantic." you laughed as he twirled you around, pulling you back into his chest.

"that you are. it's truly one of the things i love most about you." he whispered, humming along as the song faded out, causing you to hum contentedly as you looked up at him.

"only you, darlin'. only you babe." you both sang to one another before the rain grew heavier, causing you both to run back into the car, laughing loudly as you both tried to warm yourselves up.
