Nightmare was currently busy fending off his own tentacles, which seemed intent to curl around him and refuse to let him move.
His tentacles had been more clingy lately and his gang had been asking questions more and more. It was awkward. He had to keep making excuses that made no sense, but they didn't press.
"Off!" He huffed, forcing one of his tentacles onto his bed. His tentacles slowly calmed down and he rolled his eye. "Clingy assholes, honestly."
He paused as he heard a knock at the door followed by the familiar voice of Cross asking if he could come in.
Nightmare hummed as one of his tentacles picked up a book and set it in his lap. He opened it and looked down at the page. "Come in!"
The door creaked open and footsteps sounded. He looked up slightly and was startled to see his entire gang standing by his bed, all with varying looks of concern or frustration.
"Boss-- we've noticed something." Error was the first to speak. Nightmare hummed and closed the book, tipping his head to one side. "Your tentacles.. they've been acting weird. Why?"
Nightmare flinched. He felt a sinking feeling form in his stomach, and the fact his tentacles began twitching made him feel even more nervous. "Well-- uhm--" he struggled for any answer. He was running out of excuses.
His mind came up blank. He then looked down at his tentacles, hesitating. He could just tell the truth-- but then he'd sound crazy.
He couldn't tell the truth. Or could he?
He could feel their eyes on him, all awaiting a response. All awaiting for the embarrassing truth.
And so,
"M-My tentacles are sentient!"
Confusion and shock washed over his gang. Hot shame burned his face and he looked away.
"A-A while ago, my tentacles started acting on their own accord--" he went on. "I came to the conclusion that they must have their own mind apart from mine, and that- well- I just--" He went quiet. His mind came up blank for anything else to say.
"So.. your tentacles aren't really-- well-- yours?" Horror asked.
Nightmare gave a small nod.
His gang huddled together and began whispering to each other. Nightmare watched them quietly, gripping onto one of his tentacles tightly. Error then looked over at him.
"Don't worry, Boss. It's fine. Just a bit startling." Error smiled slightly. Nightmare looked up at him then nodded, looking away again.
He heard them all leave and shut the door. Then relief washed over him.
It had went well.
