"WHAT"?! Pete slammed the table. The two were sitting in a busy cafe heads turning towards them.
"Shhh stop yelling people are staring" Bas anxiously cried.

Pete sat back down collecting his thoughts.
"So let me get this straight out of all the things you could've done earn some money your first choice was oh I don't know join a MAFIA GANG"

Bas signed. I'm not joining a gang I'm working as a bodyguard for their family.
Pete gave him a blank face.
"Yes thank you for clearing that up."
He put his hands on his head.
"That's messed up dude, I mean I get that your family is in a tough spot but getting involved with these kinds of people...is it really safe?" Pete asked.

"Don't worry I wouldn't be telling you this if it wasn't. Actually to be honest I'm not supposed to be sharing you all this either" Bas told him becoming nervous.
"Great! Then why are you, what if you get in trouble!"
Bas was silent and then finally answered.

"Because I would like you to join with me."

The cafe door swung open Pete rushing out. The cashier stunned by the sudden action.
"PETE WAIT" Bas ran after him trying to get him to calm down. Eventually he caught up and got him to stop running. Pete turned.
"NO okay there is no way that I am getting along with these types of people I understand that they might be providing you a lot but why would you even ask that of me."

Bas let out a huff.
"Because don't you understand people like you and me, we're different than others. Do you really believe that we can just live normal lives follow our dreams or whatever bullshit that is. We have a family, a family that needs money. T-there's no other choice..." Bas couldn't continue he felt his voice breaking up.

"Well I hope it doesn't come to that" and with that Pete leaves his friend and goes back home to his mother.

"Mâae I'm home" Pete happily yelled as always the room smelled delicious seeing food in the kitchen.
"Mâae..." Pete scanned the kitchen and living room but no one was home. It's only him and his mother living in a small apartment flat.

After his father passed away when he was young his mother had raised him alone. He was an only child and his parents were always distant from their relatives. A few years ago due to their falling financial conditions they moved into a smaller space. A year ago his mother was diagnosed with Covid-19 and fell more sick in the recent months.

She had to leave her job due to her physical conditions and started a home catering business but it wasn't enough to meet amends with the piling medical bills. Pete stopped going to school in the last few months and took on various jobs to pay off the bills. He compromised with his mother saying that it would only be missing the first semester and can return for the next one.

He walked into his mother's room and saw her looking upset as if she had cried. He frowned and saw a letter on her dresser. He reached over to read it and it was the recent update on her condition.

It had gotten worser and the recent checkup points to more treatment and larger bills. Pete was frozen, this lump sum he would never be able to make enough from just being a server at a local diner let alone even working for the whole year.

That night before changing into his pj's he remembers the card in his pocket.

"At least keep this card if you ever change your mind" said Bas sneaking in a card in Pete's back pocket.
