The Monster

"Nancy! Y/n! Come on, come on. Where are you?" "Jonathan! Jonathan! We're right here!" She yells. "Nancy! Y/n! Come on!" "Jonathan, where are you?" I yell. "Jonathan, We're right... We're right here!" We keep running around. "Just follow my voice! Follow my voice, Y/n, Nancy, I'm right here!" We saw that thing again, it growls. We hide behind a tree. She runs to the "gate" where we came from. I quickly follow her before it comes back. I see him holding her. "I got you' He assures her. "Jonny, I'm gonna go home. Take care of her alright."

I'm walking home, sniffling while doing so. I walked into someone. "Shit, I'm sorry. I wasn't watching where I was going." I look up and see Steve. "Yeah, no problem." I quickly wipe my face with my sleeve. "What happened? Why are you walking around here this late? You seem upset." "Could say the same about you." "You didn't answer the question" I try to walk away but he grabs my arm. "Shit, you're freezing. Let's get you inside, my house is closest." "Thank you" I normally would never accept his offer, but I don't want to be alone. Or face my mom (and dad) in this state.

Once we get inside, he realises the state I'm in. "Have you been crying? Why are you so dirty" "I don't know" Everything that just happened has been extremely confusing. "Look take a warm shower, I'll get you some fresh clothes" "Thank you" He leads me upstairs into his room and gives me a pair of his sweatpants and a hoodie. He motions to a door. "There is the bathroom, take as long as you need" I nod.

I walk back into his room, my face still red from crying. "Better?" He asks. "Yeah, thank you" "So what happened back there?" "To be honest, I don't know. I was looking for a clue of what could have scared will. I just wanted some answers. Next thing I know I wake up somewhere dark. I'm sorry I shouldn't have come here. I should get going" "No! Stay, it's fine. You shouldn't be out there so late and you're clearly upset." "thank you, i don't really want to be alone right now" I let out a sob. "Hey, hey, it's okay. you're safe" He wraps his arms around me and I cry in his chest.

After a while, i finally break the silence. "Why were you upset?" I look up at him. He just smiles and brushes some hair behind my ear. "Doesn't matter. Let's get some sleep" He starts making a "bed" on the ground. "What are you doing?" I smile. "You take the bed. I'll take the floor." "Don't be silly, we can share it." "Yeah sure," He gets in next to me. "Can I ask you something?" "Yeah" "Don't get mad at me okay?" "Promise" "How come you're a totally different person in school and outside of school? Right now you're like a super sweet guy and that night at the quarry. No offence but you are like a total douchebag in school." I chuckle and he does too. "I don't know why I act like that, to be honest" "Oh, well goodnight"

I wake up. "Y/n, you okay. You were screaming" "Nightmare I guess" I look up at him. "you're crying... Come here" He opens his arms. "deep breaths. shh, it's gonna be okay. "You're safe. It's okay, I promise you, you're safe." "I'm sorry for waking you," I say after I've calmed down. "Don't worry about it. I was already awake." "how often do you have nightmares?" "I have always had them I guess, but they've been worse since you know" "Oh" "Yeah" 

We both wake up. "Goodmorning" "Goodmorning" "I uh, I have to go before my brother wakes and realises I wasn't home" He clenches his jaw when I mention my brother. "Alright" I get my clothes and open his window. "Hey, Steve" "Yeah?" "Thanks again" I don't wait for his response I just climb out of his room.

5 minutes after I got home, I hear Jonathan and Nancy. "Y/n, are you home" "Uh yeah" "Come with us, we might have come up with something." "Yeah just a second"

They fill me in on everything on the drive to the store.

We go to the checkout once we got everything we need. "And I'll have four boxes of the.38s." The guy behind the register looks at us weirdly. "What you kids doin' with all this?" "Um... Monster hunting." Nance says honestly and he just shrugs.

"Monster hunting?" "You know, last week... I was shopping for a new top I thought Steve might like.

It took me and Barb all weekend. It seemed like life or death, you know? And... and now" "You're shopping for bear traps with Jonathan Byers." He finishes. "Yeah." "What's the weirdest part? Me or the bear trap?" "You. It's definitely you."

A car passes us and honks. "Hey, Nance! Can't wait to see your movie." "What the hell was that?" I ask. "I don't know." She turns around and starts walking. "Hey! Where are you going?" "Nancy, wait!" I run after her with Jonathan. She stops at the movie theatre. "Oh my god," I exclaim when I read it. Someone wrote 'Starring Nancy the slut Wheeler' on the display. "Jesus," My brother says.

She turns the corner and I follow her. "Nance, wait!" Tommy is still spray painting, Carol is laughing together with Nicole and Steve is just standing there. "Tommy, you write like a three-year-old." "Shut up!" "I didn't know you could spell." Nance speeds up when she sees steve. "Aw, hey there, princess!" "Uh-oh! She looks upset." She ignores them and slaps Steve right in the face. "What is wrong with you?" "What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you? I was worried about you. I can't believe that I was actually worried about you." He scoffs. "What are you talking about?" "I wouldn't lie if I were you." "You don't want to be known as the lying slut now, do you?" "Speak of the devil," Tommy says when Jonathan walks up to them. "You came by last night?" "Ding! Ding! Ding! Does she get a prize?" "Look, I don't know what you think you saw, but it wasn't like that." "What, you just let him into your room to... study?" "Or for another pervy photo session?" "We were just-" "You were just what? Finish that sentence. Finish the sentence." She stays silent. "Go to hell, Nancy." He turns around to walk away. "Come on, Nancy, let's just leave." Jonathan tries to pull her away but this makes steve turn around again. Steve looks at me and I give him a look to drop it. "You know what, Byers? I'm actually kind of impressed. I always took you for a queer, but I guess you're just a little screw-up like your father. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that house is full of screw-ups. You know, I guess I shouldn't really be surprised. A bunch of screw-ups in your family." Je jits him and Jonathan stops walking. "Jonathan, leave it." "I mean, your mom... I'm not even surprised what happened to your brother." "Steve, shut up!" "I'm sorry I have to be the one to tell you, but the Byers, their family, it's a disgrace to the entire-" He says hitting my brother again. I was ready to punch him in the jaw but Jonathan beat me to it. They start fighting. "Steve! Steve. Stop! Steve! Knock it off, you guys!" Steve ends up on the ground with Jonathan hitting him. Nance is yelling at Jonathan to stop while I try to pull him off him. "Jonathan, stop! Stop! You're going to hurt him! Jonathan, stop! Jonathan, get off of him!" I hear sirens but it doesn't stop him. I end up getting a hit in my eye from him. I stumble a bit. 

Tommy and Steve manage to escape while the cops arrest Jonny.
