It felt like her breath was locked up inside her chest for the rest of class.
The feeling was probably all in June's head, but she swore she could feel Billy's eyes on her for the rest of the period. The sense of his gaze made it hard for her to do her work, she was scared to move or even breathe.
When the bell finally rang again, she was able to start inhaling and exhaling at a normal rate. Unfortunately, June's peace was disturbed when she heard the teacher's voice ring out.
"June, Billy, come over to my desk for a moment." Billy mosied up from his chair and ambled over to Ms. Raymond. June slung her bag over her shoulder and hurried to the teacher's side, just wanting the day to be over.
When they both arrived at her workspace, she handed Billy a copy of the book, To Kill a Mockingbird.
"Billy, I need you to read that and write a report about it. I'm giving you a month to complete the assignment, and if you need anything–any sort of help–whatever you might need, Juneberry here is going to be happy to oblige you. Right June?"
Why does she keep using my full name? Nobody calls me that. Nobody has EVER called me that. Well, mom...
With a sigh of resignation, "Anything you need Billy, just give me a call. Now if that's all I'll be going. I need to get to my next class. Bye." She stated before pivoting on her heels and beginning her trip to 6th period.
Just after June made her narrow escape from the classroom and began to see the hope of the ending day, she felt a tight grip wrap around her arm. Whipping her head around, she found the new boy gazing harshly at her, annoyance written all over his face. She was frightened to find out what was going through his mind.
"Do you need something..?" She questioned politely, plastering on an obliging smile instead of getting snippy like she wanted to.
"Well, you were the one who said to give you a call if I needed anything. I doubt I will because there are so many better things that I could be spending my time doing," He paused, biting his lip and scoffing at his situation, "but on the off chance that I do end up needing your help... I don't have your phone number."
Sighing, June grabbed a marker from the side pocket of her backpack, she bit the cap off and went to pick up his hand. Maybe she made it up in her head, but ever so slightly, she felt him flinch away from her grasp. Taking it into consideration, she made sure to pretend like she didn't notice any difference, but was as gentle as she could be when taking his hand in her own. Hands shaking ever so slightly, she messily scrawled out her home phone's number and turned his palm back over, allowing it to fall back to his side
"Um... Thanks, I guess." He grumbled out half-heartedly. She nodded with a bright smile on her face before turning and jogging to her new class, trying to escape the awkwardness of her attitude in the situation as quickly as she could.
6th period went by like nothing. Then it was time for the 7th. June's last class period of the day had the one and only Steve Harrington.
"Hey, nerd," The 'King of Hawkins High' smiled at June as she sat in the seat behind him. He reached over and ruffled her auburn hair with his hand.
"Yeah the nerd who's helping you pass Anatomy, so you better be grateful, old man." She grinned back at him, taking his hand off her head and setting it back on the back of his seat.
"Shut up, you're only a year behind me you know?" He opposed, obviously offended, but doing a pretty shitty job at trying to hide it.
"Aw, did I hurt your feelings, Stevie?" June pouted, impersonating him, "Here. To make you feel better," kissing her hand, she stamped it on his forehead and smiled. He looked at her with a tight-lipped smile of annoyance. "You love me, Harrington," she confirmed, smirking to herself as she leaned back on the chair.
"Yeah, whatever loser," He rolled his eyes, turning back around in his seat as class started.
. . .
"Come on Juno, we need to get in the car, you know what a cluster-fuck the parking lot turns into when school gets out!" He insisted, pushing her along with both his hands on the small of her back. He was moving so fast that to everyone else it looked like one of those cartoons where one character is kicking up gravel in a desperate attempt to stop themself from being pushed so hard that they fall over.
"STEVE!! OW!!" June shouted, pushing herself away from his grasp, She rubbed her lower back gently, trying to make the ache of his touch go away. "You know that the skin back there is sensitive, Steve."
"You're right, you're right, my bad..." He sighed, brushing a hand through his fluffed locks as they continued the short trek to his vehicle, "You should just stop being so sensitive then." He teased, elbowing her lightly in the arm.
"You're funny Harrington," She fake-chuckled before winding back her arm and jabbing his bicep with her fist.
Only when June reached the door to his car and turned to open it did she realize that Steve was still standing starkly a few feet away, cradling his arm in his hand, a look of absolute betrayal smothering his face.
"Stop being so sensitive," June rolled her eyes, leaning on the car and resting her head on her hands.
After about 5 minutes of sulking and rubbing his arm gently, Steve waddled over to the car and got in. Hopping in the seat next to him, June giggled quietly.
"Did I hurt you, Little Stevie? You want me to kiss it? Make it feel better?" She questioned, puckering her lips at him.
Expecting some snarky comment, she was shocked to feel a large hand covering the majority of her face.
"You are a jerk Juneberry Rennis." He insisted, squeezing June's face with his fingers. "I hope the Demogorgon gets you."
"I'm sorry, Steven Davis Harrington," June started, "I didn't know that's how you felt about me," She stuck out her tongue and reached for the door handle.
Before her fingers could even touch the cool metal of the handle, the cylindrical lock snapped down. Slightly taken aback by the sudden mechanical action, it barely even registered in her mind when Steve took her chin in between his thumb and forefinger and began to turn her head so he could look her in the eyes.
"I'm sorry Junie, I didn't mean to make ya feel bad, I was just messing with you." He reasoned, leaning his head against the headrest. Picking up her hand, he pointed it at himself and in a small voice scolded himself: "Bad Steve. Bad...Don't do that to Miss June!"
Unable to contain the small smile peeking through on her face, June remarked "You are a dumbass Steve Harrington." She ruffled his hair, now grinning ear to ear.
Steve only sat back, turned the keys in the ignition, and reached his arm over June's head, holding the back of her headrest to back out of the parking lot.
. . .
Billy glared at the sports vehicle as it pulled past him in the parking lot. However, when he met a pair of newly familiar shimmering eyes in the car, he tossed his cigarette to the ground and stomped it out.
Of course, the nerdy little pipsqueak had to be tangled up with King Steve too.
"What's your deal?? Did one of the girls already Cockblock you..? I thought you were better than that Billy, it is only the first day." Max taunted, leading herself to the front of the blue Camaro, leaning against the hood.
"Shut the hell up Max."
