Chapter 5: The Symbol

POV: Averyn

Darkness.

Indefinite darkness.

Pain.

Pure pain.

In pure and true darkness, trying to reach a faint speck of light in the distance.

I then heard a machenical sound behind me.

Click.

Such a simple sound, and yet it had such an alarming effect.

I spun around to see what was in behind of me.

Red lasers.

Red drones.

Danger.

I tried to move my feet, but I could not.

Pure pain struck my feet and spread across my body.

I could not move.

The drone was getting closer.

It was beginning to shoot lasers.

I collapsed to the ground.

Gravity pulled me to surrender.

I could not fight it.

The red bullet was getting closer.

I was going to die to a drone.

Closing my already hurt eyes, I braced for blood to gush down my face.

I braced for a bloody death.

A second had passed. And another. And yet another.

Keeping my eyes closed, I could barely keep track of how much time had passed. A minute? Maybe two? Or maybe three?

But I was still there, collapsed on the cold black surface, yet still alive.

I opened my eyes.

A glowing blue shield, seemingly made out of strings of data, blocked the bullet and destroyed it.

It then knocked the drone out of my field of vision.

"How-" I asked out loud, but there was no reply.

"Why me? Why did you save me?"

The shield began to shift its shape, before it turned into a floating... drone. Only it was a blue one instead of a red. I recognized the shape immediately, only that I could not tell why. Just vaguely familiar...

Wait...

My drone model...! My Project 248, the weird drone... was it the same one? It looked more or less the exactly same shape.

I saw it clearly.

Floating. Operating. Working well.

"Hello?" I asked it. It did not reply, instead it just blinked its frontal light once, and showed a semi-transparent screen with a single word on it.

AVEM.

I felt warmth underneath me instead of the cold floor. I tried to open my eyes, but I could only open my right eye slightly. The other eye burned with pain as I tried to open it, only to feel a piece of cloth covering it. The light was unbearably bright as I gradually saw everything that was beside me.
