Adam's mind was stuck on the brutal murder that took place in the mall the previous night as he walked through the halls of Shadyside High.

A girl was murdered and people were making jokes about the witch. Heather was killed by her best friend, and even if her locker was decorated as a memorial, no one seemed to want to care. Heather wasn't close to many people, but that didn't mean she deserved to be pushed to the side under some witch conspiracy.

People took it as a joke. Death was a joke to them. It was sickening. Even the school didn't take the whole witch thing seriously, their trophy stand was labeled 'Shadyside Witches' like apparently everyday was Halloween.

Shadyside was the exact opposite in comparison to Sunnyvale. Shadyside was just misery and death, labeled the most popular area in the USA for killings and murders. No wealthy people existed in Shadyside, there were no good jobs, and basically almost every teenager had some sort of mental or physical health problem, whether it be being addicted to drugs or being diagnosed with some mental illness. Depression was very common here, Adam couldn't blame anyone who was depressed because they lived here of all places. Shadyside had nothing to offer in Sunnyvale's eyes, just more people to walk all over. Sunnyvale was for preppy, wealthy people who didn't know what misery was. They had no crime rate, at all, not for about 300 years at least, the town's witch, Sarah Fier, haunted Shadyside, as it was rumored.

Like Camp Nightwing in '78. The axe killer Tommy Slater killed his friends, girlfriend, and other Shadyside campers before ultimately disappearing. Or, Ruby Lane in 1965. She killed her friends and boyfriend, and then herself. She cut her wrists open and she willingly bled out to die. Or maybe many of the other stories and murderers that had taken place in Shadyside. No matter what, those stupid, ignorant Sunnyvaler's were always protected.

Adam made his way to the girls bathroom, where Kate Schmidt and Simon Kalivoda were waiting for him as they sprayed red spray paint onto the bathroom stalls. Adam couldn't help his eyes get locked onto the blonde who smiled so kindly towards him, asking how his morning was and how he slept. He responded with the usual, fine and not that good. Insomnia was a common problem for Adam, but his lack of being able to swallow pills like an adult made melatonin impossible to take, such as basically everything else except Pepto Bismol. His throat would automatically close up no matter what he did, making him gag the nasty chemicals back up as he nearly threw up from the taste of it. Simon offered to get him gummies, but he already tried, they never worked no matter the dosage.

Simon gives the brunette a hug, and a platonic kiss on the cheek before he drags him into the stall with him, giggling about scaring Deena. Adam didn't understand how Simon could be so happy so early in the morning, but through his dark and heavy eyebags, he couldn't lie that he thought it was kind of cute. Both him and Simon were openly queer, and were awaiting to face a serial killer standing above them at this point for being gay. They were only out because someone saw Simon kiss Adam on the cheek in the band room after class and told the whole school. People assumed they were queer, and they were right, sadly. They weren't together though, their touchy love was just platonic as they were both lonely, queer teens.

Deena walks into the bathroom as Kate starts reciting the stupid witch rhyme in an eerie voice, Simon pops out to continue and Adam follows, finishing the last line as the curly haired girl stands in front of the mirror, ranting that we weren't funny and people just died. At least there was one thing Adam and Deena could agree upon.

"It's just fun," Simon fake pouts.

"It's sick," Deena replies.

"What? The dude was wearing a Halloween skull mask!" Simon argues, "How is that not fun?"

"Si, people like, died. Don't say that" Adam says, shaking his head in disappointment as Deena agrees with him.

"The dude was probably just some sad sack who hated his life, like the rest of us, except he decided, 'Hey, why don't I get out of here for good, and take Heather and a couple other mallrats with me?' There's no angry dead witch who made him postal. The only thing that made him go crazy is this town!"

"Shadyside sucks balls" Adam mumbles with a shrug, leaning against the sinks.

Simon leans against the bathroom stall with his elbow, Kate stood next to the window a few feet away. Deena throws her stuff down on the floor as she finishes ranting.

"Are you okay?" Kate asks

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"Seems like.. maybe you got a little witch in you," Simon teases with a little giggle.

Kate laughs as Simon climbs up on the toilet in the stall where they just hid, reaching for the vent.

"Dude, why are you guys even here? This is the girls' bathroom." Deena scoffs

Simon pulls out a shoebox from the vent, responding in a sing-song voice. "Candy store"

"You know we don't believe this witch shit, right?" Kate says, fixing her ponytail in the mirror, "It's just, like, fucked-up Santa Claus or something."

"Ho ho ho!" Simon exclaims quietly

Adam sighs as he pulls his headphones back up, pressing play on his cassette player, playing Crimson and Clover. Adam's only means of therapy was music. When he got overstimulated or wanted to mentally leave a moment, his cassettes and player were at his side. Deena tries giving the colorful shoebox to Kate as she asks what it is.

"I need you to give this to Sam tonight."

"Yeah, uh-uh. No way."

"Come on, Kate."

"No way, Deena. I am not getting mixed up in your ex drama. Do it yourself."

"I'm not going to the game. I quit band."

"Since when?" Adam asks, surprised that Deena just 'quit' band. She'd been playing trumpet since she was like, twelve.

"Since who gives a shit!" Deena exclaims to the brunette.

"Was band the only extracurricular you had left?" Kate asks.

Deena doesn't respond, meanwhile Simon hands Kate the box from the vent as she keeps talking about the band and facing Sam. She opens the box, revealing a shit ton of pill bottles filled with drugs, including some coke and weed.

"What? You're dealing again? I thought you stopped after this dingus' brother OD'd." Deena exclaims, talking about Simon's brother who got a hold of some pills and took them like a dumbass little kid.

"Timothy? Wh.. Uh.. Timmy wasn't a real OD" Simon tells Deena, standing up and putting an arm around Adam. "He didn't actually die"

"They brought him back" Adam shrugs as Simon imitates the sound of the ventilator shocking his brother back to life.

"You're all morons." Deena says

"Which one of us is valedictorian, again?" Kate asks rhetorically, "President of every club this shithole has to offer?"

Simon grabs his backpack, leading Adam out of the bathroom as Kate and Deena follow behind them.

"I'm getting out of here. Off to claim my place among the stars, bitch"

"Yeah, good luck with that" Adam chuckles as Kate gives him the middle finger

"Woo! The witch lives! Long live Sarah Fier!" A random boy shouts as he pulls a fake body around the hall with a rope, Simon cheers after him as the whole hall stays silent. Some cheer and shout after the kid, but go back to their conversations. Disgusting.

"Okay, see you guys at lunch, I gotta get to chemistry" Adam speaks flatly, walking off as Simon chases after him, having to go to the same class.

Kate and Deena separate ways just as the bell rings, unflooding the halls of Shadyside High School once again.
