Alexandra Steele, Dylan Kingston, and I had left the gang about 5 months back to follow a new business venture in Armadillo. A real estate scam originally, which turned into every type of scam up and down all of New Austin. We had finally brought in enough, a couple grand, to go home.
The last few letters from dad and Arthur came from Blackwater, we figured that was our best bet. If they weren't there... well, I was really hoping they would be there. We set off on our long journey, excited to see our gang, our family, again, only to arrive in the middle of a shoot out.
We watched from a cliff that overlooks the town, shots being fired from nearly every inch of that place.
"What the fuck did we miss?"
A: "I dunno, whatever happened was huge."
D: "What do you bet our boys are at the bottom of this?"
"Every cent we just earned."
D: "Yeah, looks like it'll all be spent cleaning up their mess."
A: "When is it not?"
I spotted a group of men leaving the town, all with guns drawn, "Look, they're headed out. Let's get down there and see if we can't save their asses. Again."
We rode down and 'joined the posse' long enough to find out they were headed North. We slipped away and rode hard, taking every short cut and side rode possible. The law would stick to the main roads seeing that they were carrying wagons. But knowing Dutch, he'd find a side road and ride it slow and gentle, keeping the wagons in tact while losing the law.
Just as I was starting to lose hope of finding them, two men on horses were riding on either side of the poor excuse of a trail.
John and Charles!
"Hey!"
John turned around and halted his horse, "You gotta be kidding me, perfect timing you three!"
Charles did the same, "Holy shit, welcome back."
"Wish I could say it's good to be back, Charles."
A: "Seriously, we leave y'all alone for five seconds."
J: "Try five months."
D: "Oh, don't tell me you missed us."
J: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't."
A: "Hey, you two can flirt later,"
D: "Shut up. What the hell happened, Charles?
C: "I promise I'll explain it to you later. Right now, you three should ride up to meet with the rest of the gang."
We agreed and picked up the pace. We quickly ran into a group of single file wagons and more people on horses. We rode to the front, dad and Dutch were driving the lead wagon.
Dad: "Kymberly! You're back, it's so good to see you, dear. I missed you."
Dutch: "We all did!"
"I missed y'all, too. But what do you say we save the welcome wagon for when we get out of this mess?"
Dad: "Agreed."
Dutch: "You three should fill in the gaps in the tree line, we'll find a place to rest soon enough."
---
Apparently 'soon enough' was Dutch for 'late into the night, literal hours later.'
We walked straight into a blizzard. We moved back into single file ensuring no one could fall off the trail and get lost, which would be easy considering no one could see a foot in front of them. We trucked on until we almost froze to our saddles.
Word down the fugitive line was that someone scouted an abandoned mining town we could stay the night in. We piled into the ghost town and everyone scattered to do their assigned jobs. I had just stepped into a shabby cabin when the words "Davy's dead." pierced my ears. He was a good man but all I could think of was one thing...
Arthur.
I hadn't been able to see him yet. I had missed him more than the rest of the gang combined. Truth be told, if it wasn't for dad and Arthur, I wouldn't even be in the gang anymore. I looked all around the cabin, panic beginning to set in. If he had fallen in Blackwater-
"Kym?" a voice that felt like home washed all my worries away. I spun around, spotting him across the room,
"Arthur," I pushed my way to him and embraced him so tight I thought my arms were gonna fall off.
Dad: "What're we going to do, we need supplies..."
Dutch: "First of all, you're gonna stay here, and you are going to get yourself warm. I sent John and Micah scouting out ahead, Arthur and I are gonna ride out and see if we can find one of them."
Arthur: "In this?"
Dutch: "Just for a short bit, and I don't see any other choice we have."
He turned to the rest of the gang, probably for another one of his long-winded speeches, most of which I tune out. I turned to Arthur,
"I'm going with you two."
A: "No, you should stay here and get warm."
"Ah, that's cute... but I wasn't asking and you know it."
A: "Please, there's been too much loss."
"That's exactly why I'm coming with, to watch your back. What if y'all ran into something, or someone, out there and I wasn't there to help. I'd never forgive myself,"
A: "I know... Damnit Kymberly, just... get another coat, okay?"
"You should too."
I asked Alex for her extra coat and threw it on just as Dutch called for Arthur, I ran out after them.
D: "We ain't run into them yet, so, they must be down the hill- what are you doing? Get back inside and get warm."
"I've spent five months not being bossed around and I'm not starting today, Dutch. I'm coming with."
A: "I've already tried, Dutch, we both know it's no use."
D: "Fine, just please, don't get sick on me."
"Don't plan on it."
We saddled up and started trudging downhill,
"Hey, what happened back in Blackwater? The girls and I just showed up to a massacre, I'd like to know why."
A: "Yeah, I never got the chance to ask you what happened on that boat."
D: "We missed you two, that's what happened."
A wonderful... yet another super vague answer, totally missed those...
