Arthur rode back up after doing something for Bill,
"He says it's all fine."
J: "We'll soon find out."
D: "Okay, cover your faces. Train should be here any minute now."
We all pulled up our bandanas and the train began to rumble the ground below us.
D: "Good luck, all of you. You all know what to do."
"Let's get out of here in one piece, yeah, boys?"
I watched Bill get into position and...
nothing.
D: "Oh, you have got to be kidding me!"
A: "Where did you find that moron?"
"Same place he found the rest, drunk in a bar. Come on!'
Lenny, Javier, Arthur, and I jumped off our horses and ran across the top of the tunnel, hoping to catch the train before it came out the other end.
We jumped, Arthur and I landing fine and Javier falling off the side.
L: "Hey, over here! Pull me up!"
Arthur and I rushed to the side of the train, Lenny barely hanging onto the railing.
A: "I've got you, now stop yelling."
We managed to get him up,
"You're okay. Let's go slow this beast down."
L: "Where's Javier?"
"He fell, the others'll get him."
We jumped down from the roof and snuck our way through the cabins. We took out the guards one by one by knife, managing to get to the front undetected. Lenny beat us to the cab and halted the train to a stop.
I hopped off, a bullet hitting a rock just passed me, "We got company!" I dodged behind a large set of rocks for cover.
The three of us took them down as we pushed our way to the back car. Of course it was an army against a wannabe crew, so we quickly found some resistance. We ducked behind some cover as the bullets from their guns reigned relentless.
Lenny just peeked above the rocks, his hat being shot off his head. He fell back with his back to them, panting heavily.
"You okay?"
L: "I think so."
A: "What the hell are we gonna do?"
"What choice do we have?" I bolted from behind the cover, dodging bullets as I went to the other side of the train. I used the train as cover, making my way further down and sniping the ones that didn't see me run.
Finally, the others showed up and finished off the rest of them. We walked towards them to finally claim our prize.
D: "You three alright?"
Lenny and I nodded,
A: "Yes, let's get the money and go."
D: "We got some fellas holed up in this last car."
A: "Ah, shit."
"Just when I thought the day was coming to an end."
D: "What are you boys planning on doing in there? Listen to me, we don't want to kill any of ya... Any more of ya. I give you my word, but trust me, we will."
A voice came from inside, "I work for Leviticus Cornwall."
D: "Come on boys."
V: "We got our orders."
D: "Okay. You asked for it. Five..."
V: "We ain't openin' this door."
D: "Four... Three, two, one." he turned to us, "Seems our friends have gone deaf. Wake 'em up a little!"
We all sent rounds into the car, surely scaring the shit out of the both of them.
D: "That's enough! Mr. Williamson, give Mr. Morgan and Mr. Smith some dynamite. You two boys go blow that door open."
They started toward the door and I took some very large steps back.
D: "Now, don't matter much to us, but you boys in there might wanna take a step back."
They lit the fuses and ran back to us, the dynamite exploding the door wide open.
D: "Alright, come on, just walk on out here."
The three of them walked out with their hands above their heads.
D: "We don't want to kill you, we just wanna rob your boss."
Lenny, Micah, and Arthur headed inside while the rest of us watched Cornwall's dogs.
D: "I take it y'all got on okay."
"As good as we could've on our own."
D: "Still got the job done, I'm proud of you."
"Thanks." I went back to my horse, "Morgan, you alright in there?"
Arthur emerged from the car, "Yeah. Found some bonds." he handed them to Dutch, "They worth anything?"
D: "Oh, sure. Bearer bonds. I think we can probably sell these pretty easily. Well done. Now would you get rid of all of this?"
A: "The train?"
D: "Yeah, get it out of here."
"And them?"
D: "I don't care. Whatever you two feel. Kill 'em, leave 'em here, send 'em with the train. Just make sure they don't send no folk after us."
"Got it."
A: "Okay."
D: "See you back at camp. When you get back, we'll be movin' on."
The gang turned to head to camp, leaving us to clean the mess, as per usual.
"Alright, on the train, you three."
A: "Anything funny and we'll kill all three of you. So behave."
3: "We won't tell a soul, we swear!"
"You'd better hold that true, son, because we will come after you. And we will burn your whole fucking world to the ground."
A: "I'll get the train going, you just meet me with the horses."
I nodded and headed towards the head car, Arthur set the train to start moving and we were off. To be fair, unless one of them managed to make it to the conductor's spot from all the way back there, they were just going to keep going until they crashed into something.
"How you feel about this whole, heading east thing?"
He sighed, "Not good. But, it does seem to be our only option."
"True... I don't know, Arthur, I just feel like something's changed since I left."
"I know exactly what you mean. But this gang is still our family, it's still where we belong."
"I'm starting to fear it's the only place we ever will belong."
"You thinkin' about getting out?"
"God, no. I don't know where I'd go if I ever left. But, what about our ranch in the west? All of us living on the biggest property that we could buy and we'd have family dinners and it'd all be perfect. That was the plan. Now we're headed east."
"Who knows, maybe there'll be a ranch somewhere out there we like more."
I laughed, "Since when are you the one to look on the bright side?"
He joined me, "Yeah, it sounded forced to me, too."
Though, what he said stuck with me. What if the whole Blackwater mess and heading east was exactly what we needed? What if our plan has been the wrong one this entire time and we're finally getting on the right path?
