Now, lets begin the story!
Chapter 1
Sweat was poring down my face. Some went in my eyes. It stung, but I payed no attention. Thump, thump, thump. Was that my heartbeat? No. That was the steady rhythm of the basketball hitting the ground. Yes. The one that I was dribbling. I know that I should sit out - give someone else on my team a chance to play. But no. My teammates depended on me. I was the best player on the team. I glanced up and saw my best friend Lana, sitting in the bleachers. Over the sound of the basketball and the cheerleaders screaming, I could hear Lana cheering me on. I approached the net. Instantly, my instincts took over. I knew that from where I was standing, if I threw too hard, the ball would bounce off the rim, and if I shot to lightly, the other team could snatch it. I did a quick layup and the ball went in the net. I smiled proudly. And then I saw him, by the door.
His name was Cole. I knew him quite well, actually. He was in my class at school. I was in grade 5- he was in grade 6. He was cute, with his sandy blonde hair and dark green eyes. My heart skipped a beat. My legs felt shaky. Coach Legemor came over and lead me to the bench. "Sit, take a break" he murmured, sighing. "For such a good player, you don't seem to know when to give up." I wasn't paying attention. I was admiring Cole.
Lana came over to me after the game. I had just finished getting changed out of my gym clothes. "Jessie! What happened out there?" I shrugged. Lana was my best friend. It didn't matter that we were in different grades. Like Cole, she was in grade 6 and in my class. "After you did that amazing layup... what happened? You just froze! Your hands were shaking, Jessie, shaking!" I blinked. I didn't even notice that. Oh, how I wanted to tell Lana. But she wouldn't understand. Lana and Cole... well, they had a history. A bad one. And if I told Lana about it, she would be upset. So maybe I lied? I shrugged. "I don't know what happened, Lana. I did the layup, and I just felt paralyzed." That wasn't a lie. "Must've been because I was running back and forth so much." There's the lie. But hey, it was for Lana's own good, right? We stepped out of the school. I drew my jacket around me, feeling cold. The March air had a chill to it. It was no where close to being summer. Then I spotted Cole. Again. "Hey, Jessie. Lana." He nodded a hello at her. She scowled. He turned back to me, sending me a a smile that warmed me to the bone. "That was an awesome layup, Jessie. Better than I would do, at least. Your amazing!" Lana looked the other way. "Of course it was better than you could do, Cole. You suck at basketball!" She murmured quietly. I ignored Lana. Cole was actually really good. Smirking at Cole, I said quickly "Maybe Im good enough to beat you- who knows?" Cole smirked. "Well, I challenge you for Friday night, try to beat me. Meet me outside after school. Right here." I shrugged. Might as well. "Sure." I replied, smiling. "Good luck." Lana's mom pulled up then, and Lana and I climbed into the backseat. I waved goodbye to Cole.
Lana crossed her arms, frowning."We were going to have a sleepover that night, Jessie! Did you forget or something?" I didn't forget, actually. I wanted to spend some time with Cole. But I didn't want her to know that. I smacked my forehead. "Oh, sh-" "Language, Jessie!" Her mother called from the front. "Sorry." I murmured. I turned back to Lana. "I completely forgot! Im soooo sorry." Lana smiled. "It's okay, actually. Im still sort of tired from the sleepover last weekend. Il spend this weekend relaxing in the pool." I smiled, glad that Lana forgave me. I would hate to lose my best friend, after all. But if I lost her, I know that Cole would be there for me.
Heyyyyy! Howdy, pardner! Sorry. I suffer from weirdness syndrome. Its a terrible disease known only to me, and now known to you as well. It makes me act weird. Like, all the time. Its an un-curable disease that I was born with. So, that was a taste of what was going on. Something happened between Cole and Lana (what could it be) and Jessie, although she doesn't want to tell Lana, likes Cole. So Jessie has to figure out how not to hurt Lana's feelings as she wants more and more to spend time with Cole. She has to lie to her best friend...
Okay, later!
