Evan though it was the middle of summer the floor felt like ice. Evan shivers, wishing for the fuzzy socks hidden in one of his drawers. A soft light from the living room lights the hall. It's three in the morning, why is there a light on in the living room? Evan thinks to himself stifling a yawn.
"Why are such little monsters so darn cute?" A woman's voice comes from the living room. Evan sighs, shaking his head. The light makes sense now.
"Natalie? Is that you?" Evan asks entering the doorway. A short blonde woman looks up from the laptop balanced carefully on her lap. Her eyes were bloodshot and her cheeks were damp with tears.
"Why do people think cats are evil Evan? They just wanna be loved!" Natalie asks sniffling as more tears run down her cheeks. Evan internally sighs having an idea of where this is going.
"There, there Nat. I'm sure the cats know they're loved." Evan coos sitting beside Natalie and pulling her into his arms. Natalie makes a pitiful whining noise pressing her face into Evan's neck.
"But what about the babies? They don't know what love is!" Natalie bawls as her tears soak Evan's pajama shirt. Evan lifts his eyes to ceiling in exasperation.
"We're getting a cat aren't we?" Evan asks his lips twitching slightly as he hides a smile. Natalie nods into his neck.
Seven hours later Evan finds himself being pulled along by his overexcited girlfriend into their cities animal shelter. Of course she had to remember the, particular incident of that morning. The last time that happened they ended up adopting a pair of ferrets, Galaxy and Jazz. The volunteer behind the secretary's desk grins when she sees who walked in.
"If it isn't my favorite happy couple! How're Jazz and Galaxy doing?" The volunteer asks, seeing the way Natalie's face lights up while Evan grimaces. She won a bet with a couple of the other volunteers on when they would be back.
"They're doing good!" Natalie chirps bouncing up and down. Evan wraps his arms around Natalie's waist from behind her.
"Today we're here to hopefully add a cat to our little family." Evan tells the volunteer, feeling Natalie physically shake with excitement in his arms. He didn't particularly like animals, but he loved Natalie and she loved animals.
"Awesome! I'm really happy for you guys. The cat room is just through that door." The volunteer tells the pair. Natalie bolts instantly towards the cat room and doesn't notice the look that passes between the two. Evan follows Natalie into the cat room and sees she's already at the first cage.
"What are their names Nat?" Evan asks softly his hand resting on something inside his pocket.
"Will, Ewe, Mary, Mi." Natalie lists off walking down the row of cages. After a moment her eyes widen in realization as she slowly turns around. Evan is down on one knee holding a little velvet box with an engagement ring inside. Natalie gasps covering her mouth with her hands.
"Well?" Evan asks, teasing Natalie.
Natalie nods, "Yes!" Evan slides the ring on the ring finger on her left hand before kissing her. The volunteers who had been watching or recording it on their phone cheer. Natalie pulls away from the kiss leaning towards Evan's ear. "We're still getting a cat lover boy."
