"Will you turn that crap down!?" My brother pounds on my door for the umpteenth time, each time his voice raises and I bury myself deeper into my cocoon of blankets. The door rattles one more time, shaking on its hinges, and I sigh when I hear his receding footsteps step away. When I'm sure he's gone I turn down the volume and plug in my earbuds. This way he won't come and try and break down my door, and I won't be able to hear any yelling. I snuggle down into my blankets until only my face was uncovered. Soon enough, the movie lulls me to sleep.
When morning comes I try to be as quiet as I can before I leave the house for campus. Each step I take is carefully calculated so the floorboards don't creak beneath my weight. When the front door is closed and locked behind me, that's when I feel like I can finally breathe again. I'll have a good twenty-minute walk to mentally prepare myself for my classes today. I'm just glad that the weather is nice, taking a moment to appreciate the light breeze and warm rays of sun that are shining down on me.
I make it into the lecture hall with ten minutes to spare. Finding my seat took no time, the middle row on the right side, the last seat closest to the window. But when I get there I see a notebook on the desk. I pause, looking around the room for whoever it belongs to, but the only other people here are already in their seats. I'm about to flip the notebook open to search for a name, thinking that maybe someone left it from the previous class when someone speaks up.
"That's mine." I jump, not hearing whoever it was come up behind me. When I turn around I'm met with the prettiest eyes I've ever seen, attached to an equally pretty face. I squeak. As in, a literal mouse-like sound escapes me before I can even think to form words. He stares down at me, amusement twinkling in his eyes.
"I'm sorry." My voice is quiet, so quiet that I'm not sure I actually say the words out loud. I'm too fixed in on his gunmetal blue eyes. Which are still looking at me. He blinks, and a blush spreads quickly on my face once I realized I hadn't looked away.
"You're fine." Neither of us move, I'm not sure my legs could work if I wanted them to. He clears his throat, looking to the notebook and then back at me. I gasp, realizing that I'm still holding onto it. I jut my arms out, handing it to him.
"I was...um I'm sorry. I honestly wasn't doing anything to it. I wanted to check for a name so I could return it to whomever it belonged to. I usually sit there and thought that someone may have left it from the previous class. I promise that I didn't even lift the cover." I ramble out the words in a breath, unable to stop myself before I launch my verbal paragraph at him. He chuckles, and I swear that my heart stopped for a moment. It was so low that I almost didn't hear it, but I definitely did. And boy was it a beautiful sound. It was like I was face to face with an angel.
"I didn't leave it behind. I set it down when I went to get a water from the vending machine." He held up a water bottle like I needed the proof.
"Oh.." I couldn't think of anything to say, my mind was blank.
"You can have your seat back." He motions toward the seat. All I can do is offer a slow nod, afraid that if I open my mouth again I'll mumble out some other embarrassing things. I got my notebook out and arranged my pens in their colour coded order. What I wasn't expecting was for him to take the seat next to me. I glanced over at him, eyes wide with my surprise.
"Hope you don't mind." When I don't say anything he runs his hand through his hair awkwardly.
"I mean...I'm sorry."
"No, no! You're fine." I say the words quickly and want to bonk my head on the desk for how stupid I sounded. He laughs again, and I'm thankful that he at least finds me amusing...I hope.
"Akaashi Keiji." He tilts his head and offers me the faintest of smiles. My cheeks flush, but I speak, hoping that my voice won't sound as shaky as I'm afraid it will.
