Kenma and I met by fate.
At least that's what I'd like to call it.
Really, it was just a few coincidences that somehow perfectly lined up, leading us to where we are now.
I had gone to Yukigoaka Junior High with Shoyo, and we remained friends even now. Even through the end of middle school and onto high school. Even when I moved to Tokyo because of my dad's work. We met up occasionally. Sometimes to get food, other times just to catch each other up on the other's life. I'd tell him about the new games I was into, and he'd tell me about his life as a starting player on the volleyball team. Something that I was exceptionally proud of him for.
He told me about all of the people he was meeting, the tall volleyball players that taught him all sorts of new things, helping him to become a better player. He seemed to sparkle when he spoke of volleyball now. Not that he didn't before, but now he had a light in his eyes that replaced the dull shine that had been there before.
When he told me about all his new friends one stuck out to me the most. Kenma. Shoyo told me that this friend didn't seem to really care for volleyball. He played it because it was what he was expected to do. But that's not what had me interested in his new friend. In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have remembered the guy's name. I was never very good with names. But when Shoyo started asking me for tips on a few games I grew curious.
"Why do you want to know about video games all of a sudden? I know that you like to play here and there, but it's always come second to volleyball." He perked up at my question. His eyes were wide with excitement.
"My friend plays games. He's really good at them too." He looked down, the scrunching of his brows and nose let me see the disappointment he felt.
"I'm not very good at them...so I was hoping that you could help me out. Show me how to level up or something so I can play with him." He was hopeful, the usual twinkle returning to his eyes as he asked me.
"Of course, I'll show you!" I was getting excited, I always loved exploring the world of pixels with someone. Especially when it was a non-virtual friend.
We spent about two hours that day delving into the virtual world of games. Over the next few weeks, I had helped him level up enough to play with his friend. He was excited, not as much as he was over volleyball, but still ranging pretty high. Throughout this time the three of us played games together- Shoyo, Kenma, and myself. Among all the stress of my normal teenage life, the hours we spent gaming were the highlights of my day. Knowing that I could end each day with my guildmates was truly amazing. I started my day with a smile, and ended it with the sounds of clashing swords and catching exps among friends.
The day that led me to meet Kenma was an ordinary one. I wasn't particularly happy that day. My cousin had urged me out of the house and practically dragged me out by force. She wanted to go shopping and said she needed another girl's point of view. To which I told her that she should get literally anyone else to help her. She brushed it off, telling me I had no choice in the matter. And this is where we made a deal. If I helped her shop, and find the perfect outfit, she'd buy me the new game I had my eye on.
An hour into the whole endeavor, I knew that I had signed a deal with the devil. We had already been in five stores and she had tried on almost everything in each of them. I was running low on energy and my only saving grace was the fact that she allowed a snack break.
I was refueled by my fortunate snack break...but unfortunately, that meant more shopping. And I learned a very hard lesson that day. Shopping with her was a battle. Scratch that. Shopping with her was a war. We spent two more hours in and out of various stores before I begged for mercy. After I sent copious pleas her way, she finally gave in. Saying that I had helped her find enough outfits as she lifted up multiple shopping bags, proof of the war we fought in. I threw my hands up in victory, glad to finally be free of her reign of terror.
