chapter twelve, TO GOING FULL KOOK

"Dear bird" A man's voice filled the room and Angelia looked across the table at John B. "who's Bird?" JJ asked and the girl's gaze fell to the blonde on her right side.

"That's what my dad called me" John B breathed out, locking eyes with Angel when she turned back to him.

"I hate to say, 'I told you so,' but I told you so. And you doubted your old man. I suspect at this moment, you're filled with guilt and self-loathing over our last fight, but don't kill yourself just yet, kid. I didn't expect to find the Merchant either." All five teenagers shared looks.

"You were probably right to call me out. Wasn't exactly Father of the Decade. What can I say, kid? I could smell the barn. And hopefully, we're listening to this in our brand new sugar-shack down in Costa Rica, living off passive investments and pulling on permits. If not, and you find this for less than optimal reasons, well, that's what the map is for. There she is, the wreck of the Merchant. If something happens to me, finish what I started. Go for the gold, kid. I love you, Bird, even if I didn't always act like it. I'll see you on the other side." The tape cut, static playing, and John B clicked the player off.

Angelia watched as the boy got up and began to walk out of the room but fell onto the door frame. She stood, no one would know why and she was okay with that. The girl walked over to him and placed a hand on his back. The first time she heard her father's voice after hit her harder than this.

John B turned, shrugging off her hand and rushed out the back door.

"Holy shit, he did it! Big John, He found the Merchant" JJ let out, shock evident in his voice.

"Can you, can you please?" Kiara said looking at him like he was insensitive.

    "Sorry." He apologized.

Angel looked back at the pogues and then towards the door where John B walked out. "Can you give me a bit to talk to him?" She asked and though Kiara's face flashed with confusion, the pogues nodded.

Her footsteps lead her through the back door and down to the dock. Somewhere she would have gone if she needed air. As the girl got to the dock she saw John B leaning on the post as he looked out to the water. Approaching, she saw the way his eyes glimmered against the water and she could feel the pain in his face.

"Hey," Angelia said, making her presence known.

    "hey," He responded, numbly.

"Can I?" She asked, motioning to the railing.
