"When did you start playing alongside me?" Sam screamed over the cacophony in the school basketball court.
"I don't know! DUCK!" Ashley shouted, just as a bright red ball whizzed past where Sam's head had been a millisecond ago.
"Why are you helping me? I thought you hated me," Sam teased, jumping to the side as another ball came his way.
"Trust me, I don't want to. But we are on the same team so you better not get hit by a ba-AHHHHH!" Ashley jumped, barely missing her classmates throw.
"Look who's talking. You might lose way before I do. Kale almost hit you."
"Will you please shut up! If I lose, it's on you!"
"Ouch!" A voice to Ashley's right sounded. Another of her teammates was down. Out of the original fifteen members, only five remained.
Ashley cursed under her breath. The other team still had ten members. This was going to be difficult.
The coach blew the whistle, signalling for both teams to return to the start line as the balls were arranged at the center.
"Sam, I need your help," Ashley said, the words tasting sour in her mouth.
"Oooh, somebody needs my help. What a surprise!" Sam exclaimed, feigning surprise.
"Look, I don't have the time to argue. We will lose the game if we don't act fast. I'll forgive you for today. Bare with me until the game is over. We have to win!"
"And what makes you think I'll help?" Sam nudged Ashley on the shoulder as the coach blew the whistle once again.
"Ugh! Forget it!" Ashley yelled as she ran towards the dodgeballs.
She managed to gather two balls and by the time she hurled them at the nearest target, three more of her team members were down. That left just her and Sam still standing. Oh lord!
As she watched her fallen teammates, what she didn't notice was another ball zipping towards her at full speed.
"DUCK!" A voice called behind her before firmly pulling her to the side.
"Don't worry. I've got your back, partner." Sam smirked as he patted Ashley on the back and returned to throwing dodgeballs. Sam managed to hit two members in one go. They only had five members left. Things were starting to look not so hopeless.
Ashley, having come back to her senses, picked up two more balls. She walked up to Sam and stood by his side, dodging multiple balls along the way.
"When I say go, hit the guy on the left. I'll cover you," Sam said, loud enough for only Ashley to hear.
Nodding her head, Ashley tightened her grip.
"GO!"
With that, Ashley launched the ball, hitting the target square in the stomach.
However, during the process, neither of them saw the array of balls making their way towards them from the opposite side.
Cheers erupted from the other team as they celebrated their win. Fuming, Ashley turned towards Sam.
"Oops?"
