Jennifer slumped down onto the benches in the locker room; another long shift over in the ER. She undid her medical scrubs and pulled them carefully off, making sure to avoid touching the stain of vomit that her most recent patient decided to gift her with.
After shifts like these she almost forgot why she had decided to become a doctor in the first place. She had to remind herself that she loved her job, helping people was what she had always wanted to do even if it did meant that she would have to deal with the occasional bits of gore that came with the job.
It had been a tough shift. No happy endings tonight. She had lost two patients in the space of only three hours. The first had been Mr Prewitt, he had passed after a severe stroke. He had been in the hospital for over a week, his wife had just left from visiting hours when he passed.
The second was a man. Well, he was barely a man no more than twenty years old. He had died from blood loss from a gun shot wound. She couldn't even find out his name. The hospital had given his case to the police in the hope that someone would come forward with information or a family member would soon report him missing.
Many of the deaths Jennifer dealt with were from violence. Those were the most tragic. Many of the victims far too young.
"Jen!"
She looked up quickly. She hadn't noticed that anyone else was in the room with her.
"Oh, sorry Sarah didn't see you there" she replied bowing her head back down in exhaustion.
"Tough shift then I take it." Sarah said softly, walking over to Jen, "I heard about your patient"
"Patients," Jen corrected "I lost two tonight."
"Sorry, I know it can be tough, I lost three last month it was awful. You've got to remember to not beat yourself up about it too much." Sarah walked over and put her arm around the doctor.
She really was the best friend Jen could of asked for. They had met in medical school during their first year of residency. Sarah was the only person in the hospital who new Jen was a part of the Stark family. Since leaving home she switched from using her family name of Stark to her mother's maiden name of Carbonell. She hated the stigma of the Stark name. After all their family legacy was made in war.
"Hey, me and some of the other girls were gonna go out tonight after all it is a Friday. It might cheer you up a bit if you wanted to come." Sarah said happily.
"I don't know I think I'm just gonna go home" Jen shrugged. "I'm not really feeling it tonight."
"Okay, if your sure," Sarah replied with a concerned look on her face "message me if you need a talk though. I'm always available."
"Don't I know it, you will never leave me alone" Jen laughed.
"Well then," Sarah gasped feigning shock "if that's how I'm valued in this friendship count me out."
They both laughed.
"Seriously, I'll be fine go have fun. I just need some sleep." Jen smiled at her.
"If your sure." Sarah said still looking unsure of whether she should leave.
"Go!" Jen playfully pushed her towards the locker room door.
"Alright fine, I'll miss you though" Sarah called behind her walking out the door.
Jen smiled to herself; Sarah really was the definition of a best friend. She sighed as she stood up and lifted up her bag. Hopefully next week would be better than this one.

Agent Fury had an air about him in which everybody respected. In all the time Tony Stark had known him nobody ever said a word against him.
People just seemed to do what he said no matter the consequences. That was something Tony had always respected about him. It was one of the reasons he had agreed to meet him. As always Nick Fury had suggested Tony come down to the SHIELD headquarters and he had not so politely refused and instead suggested a local diner they go to instead.
"Stark, I want to get straight to the point on why I wanted to arrange this meeting today." Nick started holding his hand over his half-empty coffee cup a waitress had just offered refill.
"You just wanted to see my pretty face and charming personality" Stark quipped back taking a large bite out of his cheeseburger.
"Not quite," he paused looking Tony up and down and assessing whether he should carry on with his line of inquiry. "It's about your sister."
Tony immediately looked up at the mention of his sister, who he had not spoken to in over a year.
"Jennifer" Nick carried on, watching Starks expression.
"Yes, I know her name." Stark jabbed back, annoyed. "What do you want with her? What has she done?"
"She hasn't done anything Stark. That's why she of interest to shield; she's not on the radar of any of our enemies especially hydra."
Seeing that Tony had not answered and continued to stare at him blankly, Nick decided to carry on.
"I also know that she's just passed her degree meaning she has training in medicine and would make a great asset to the team."
"Seems like you know more about her than I do. Why did you contact me if you only wanted to recruit her? Seems like a waste of time to not just cut out the middle man Fury."
"Well, Stark seeing as though you're her brother I thought she'd be more receptive to the idea of joining the team if it came from a family member."
"You thought wrong. She hasn't spoken to me in months so why would speaking to me convince her to join?"
"Shield is a part of the Stark legacy, your father Howard helped found this organisation and I think it's important to carry on the family tradition."
"Well, I think you would have noticed by now, as you seem to know an awful lot about my sister, that she doesn't exactly get along with the family. She doesn't even use the Stark name! I'm not sure she'd be bothered about carrying on family traditions"
Fury sighed. Noticing that Nick had not interrupted him Tony carried on.
"And why do you think I would offer my sister a job which would purposefully put her in danger? This is my sister we are on about. My only family left. I may not speak to her much but I still need to protect her."Fury took a large sip of his coffee and set his cup back on the table slowly.
"Look Stark, whether you like it or not I am offering her a job, you can either contact her and tell her, or I'll get one of my agents to contact her."
Tony looked at him with hard eyes.
"Fine as long as you promise me she will not be put in immediate danger."
"I am not one to make promises I cannot keep, I learned that lesson a while ago. But...I will try to keep her out of immediate harm's way, she will be the medic so will not be involved in any hand-to-hand combat."
Tony nodded. Picking up his coffee Nick Fury stood up. As he was walking past Tony towards the exit he placed a phone on the table.
"I think you'll find that this has the correct number on it, I'll give you a week to contact her I'll expect an answer by then Stark, don't let me down." He said quietly pausing before he carried on walking towards the door.
Tony heard the door close as he picked up the phone holding it in his hand for a second before placing it into his jacket pocket.
He stood up and decided to get a drink before calling her. He would need all the confidence he could get before speaking to his little sister for the first time in what felt like forever.☆
