The wheels of the train wheezed well into the cold night. The train had just left Mackenzie, my hometown, and I had a lot on my mind. My hand felt frost forming on the window; I could see snowflakes wiz by the train. The sky glowed beautifully as stars decorated the midnight sky; The Aurora Borealis sat at the center of the spectacle.
My mother and I were traveling by steam train to Crockford, the city where Saint Clair's Academy is located. The conductor said the trip would take about 10 hours, most of those hours spend rushing by vasts plains and forests. The train cabin that we were staying in was warm and cozy. It was small, had a bunk bed where I slept on the bottom, and an oil-powered lamp.
I took a sip of my hot chocolate and sighed.

I'll miss my home. I thought.
Saint Clair's Academy would be much different than my quaint life at Mackenzie. I heard that there would be 800 students attending this year, all of them split into five houses. A bit like Hogwarts, in a way, except the houses are separated by profession. Most of the students were wealthy elite and had alumni relatives. Because I hail from a small and run down ranch, I would be an outlier, a stranger.
I've heard rumors about them, too. That St. Clair's student body consists of a bunch of spoiled W.A.S.P.s. That they hunt poor folk for fun. That they're lizards dressed in human skin, like their parents. Someone even said that they were so inbred they are sandwiches, though even I know that last one is ridiculous.
"Rowan! Could you close the curtains, please?" My mother beckoned.
As I shut the curtains, thoughts pooled in my head. I was anxious, to say the least. I prayed that the rumors about the student body were incorrect and that they were as nervous as me. My concern was apparently visible because my mom interrupted my inner monologue.
"Don't worry about your classmates, Dear. Even if they are... unscrupulous, I'm sure that you'll find people in St. Clair that are as kind as you."
"Thanks," I murmured.
I lay on my bed, wrapping the fluffy blanket around me. My mother's advice calmed my nerves, but anxiety still lingered, dormant within me.
I tried focusing on good scenarios. I might wow everyone with my drawing skills. I heard that St. Clair hosted all sorts of clubs, so there might be students that have stuff in common with me! Maybe I might actually make a friend at St. Clair! Or maybe even a... what do the girls at my school say? A boyfriend? Girlfriend? Yeah, maybe.
But it was getting late, and the day tomorrow will be tiresome, so I breathed in, breathed out, and went to sleep.
