I still don't know why I took his hand. Holy shit.
When the whistle blew, Elias sprinted full speed from the beginning line, dragging me along, and leaving our fellow competitors in the dust. I couldn't feel my legs, all my focus was preoccupied with making sure we didn't trip over the debris.
Elias and I reached the halfway point, way before the other runners. The practitioners must have noticed because more and more obstacles popped out of the ground.
I was already having issues dodging the scrap before, these pieces were larger, and bundled up closer. Elias wasn't fairing much better; we slowed down considerably, letting the others catch up a fair amount.
"Maybe we should maybe split up-"
"NO! I'll, um. I'll handle this."
In a moment of stupidity and hot-headedness, Elias started casting a fire spell. In the middle of a forest. Full of teenagers.
"What the hell dude?" I slapped his hand down.
"Aw c'mon! You won't trust me with a little trick?" Elias continued the cast. "I know what I'm doing."
I am not getting involved in this. I let go of his hand and ran like there was no tomorrow. I'm sure the other students were tough enough to deal with him. Or maybe the administrators would do their job.
As the wind blew in my face, my neck tensed up. What the hell was that about? Why was Elias so... aggressive? We could have easily split up and reached the end, but oh well. If he wants to act like that, fine! I don't have to tolerate his, or anyone's bullshit.
Before I knew it, I reached the end. My time was 7:15, I beat my goal, but at what cost? Nova, the girl from the first group, hurried toward me.
"Oh my gosh! Are you alright?" She asked.
I exhaled. "I'm fine."
"Oh, thank the lord!" She leaned close to me. "Can you tell me about the fight?"
"What fight?"
"Between Elias and that jock, Chad."
It seems that sometime after I ran away from Elias, he and another boy got in a fight. Nova didn't know the exact details, but she and a whole bunch of students saw a massive wall of fire.
"It was super cool! I hope Elias doesn't get expelled, he would be a great- Rowan?"
"I have to go pee."
And cry, but I won't tell her that. My head hurts real bad, and my legs might give up on me any second. Not from running.
I should have stayed back home.

(A/N): I've been feeling sort of burnt out recently, so I'll be taking a break this week. I want to work on smaller projects for the time being to get out of my writing block. If you could vote, comment, and booklist this story, it would mean a lot to me.
