Obi-Wan arrived at Mustafar. It was
different from the last time he remembered it. The lakes of lava had almost dried up and were being funnelled to a massive sky scraping fortress. The fortress was the only place surrounded with lava. There was also a large rock formation about a kilometre to the left of the fortress that had a gigantic wall working as a sort of Dam for a humongous lava river.
The base of the fortress had lava-fall pouring out of it.
He could feel the dark side's strong presence. From the air, he could see a couple of kilometres south, four civilians on a landing platform. Two men and two women. All chained to the ground, crying. He could sense their fear and confusion.
Obi-Wan had landed beside them and exited the star fighter.
"Is everyone alright?" He asked, using his lightsaber to destroy the chains.
"Y-you're a Jedi?" One woman asked. Her hair was blonde and she had a weathered but beautiful face. She must've been in her fifties. The other three civilians were clearly younger. All had worn baggy, torn clothes. They were covered in sweat.
"I am." Obi-Wan replied, offering a helping hand to which she and the others accepted."A soon to be, dead Jedi."
They all turned to see Vader enter through a cloud of black smoke created by nearby lava flows. All of this near the fortress. His mechanical breathing sent shivers down the spines of the civilians.
Vader used the force to pick up Obi-Wan's star fighter and toss it into the lake of lava. It was engulfed in fire before slowly sinking below. It wouldn't be long before it had completely disappeared.
"Your feelings were right, all those years ago back on Coruscant, Obi-Wan." Vader said, stepping forward. Obi-Wan put his arm out to keep the scared civilians behind him.
"I will be the death of you.""Let these people go. They haven't done anything wrong." Obi-Wan pleaded. "Have me if you want. Just let them go."
Vader stopped and looked at the civilians. He extended his right arm and opened the palm of his hand out, picking the four civilians off of the ground. They screamed in terror.
"No!" Obi-Wan yelled in desperation.Without saying a word, Vader slowly lowered them into the lake of lava.
Obi-Wan called upon the force with all of his might in an attempt to overpower the dark lord's grip on the civilians. However, Vader's connection to the force was unparalleled to anyone who had ever existed, or will exist.
Vader lowered them until their legs were engulfed in flames.Obi-Wan would remember the sound of their screams years from now. They would haunt his dreams. Their faces melting and crackling as the lava consumed them. The sadistic sound in Vader's voice when the dark lord had told him he had failed these civilians as well.
Obi-Wan stared at the lake of lava where the civilians once were, before they were completely incinerated. A single tear dripped down his cheek.
This was the moment Obi-Wan saw the truth in Vader's words, when he had told him that Anakin Skywalker was dead.
He remembered all those years ago during the clone wars that Anakin would risk his life countless times to save innocent civilians. How he would intentionally disobey orders in favour of doing the right thing.
He remembered that sweet little boy back on Tatooine who was willing to help them repair their ship by winning the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. No thought of a reward. He just wanted to help them.
"What... what have you become?" Obi-Wan had tearfully and rhetorically asked in a croaked voice, looking back at the dark lord draped in armour. The mechanical breathing creating the illusion that this being was not a man underneath the suit.
