Nine days earlier....
On days like this, I pity the humans that think they are above their betters. Even as the bound man cries as his flesh is burnt to a crisp, while his soon to be widow watches as the mounds of straw are heaped around her. Even as the wails of humans screech up the battlement walls, I shed no tears. A king never sheds a tear, only the endless wails of those who dare defy his will.
My will.
Now bored of the fitting display for the crime of spreading rumors of weakness to the enemy, I turn and head back into the stone office. My general and friend, Kamir, closes the glass paneled door as I settle into the hardback chair before my desk. Heaped with stacks of ledgers, papers, and letters. All demanding my immediate attention, for the work of being the Alpha is never done.
"Any more visions from the High Priestess?" I say, thumbing through another ledger of reports on trade routes being attacked and demolished.
"Yes Alpha," Kamir answers, adjusting the gloves on his brown hands. "Her Grace has had one more since you came to her last about our, problem." Wisely, my friend keeps his tone calm and concise, a gift I will never posses and for that I'm grateful that my brother in all but blood has it.
"What were her exact words General?" I prod, closing yet another leather book of the failures of my soldiers. "The mountain holds our salvation," Kamir begins, hope sparking in his coal black eyes. "The forests holds our missing halfs, and a queen lays watching with human eyes."
I still, my heart skipping a beat at the long awaited news after three years of lonesome yearning nights. The solution to all our problems, now bared before me like a precious gift from the Moon Goddess herself. "You have done well my friend," I say, standing up from the desk and clamping a hand upon his shoulder,
"Now go forth and prepare the men, in three days we shall take a part of the Wild Hunt and the city's best soldiers to the Old Mountain. Where at long last we shall find the Luna we have been praying for all these years for."
Kamir nods, bowing his head before striding along the blood red carpet and out into the castle hall. Alone for the moment, I silently thank the Goddess for this great blessing. The location of the mate I have longed for since I turned eighteen. Three years of quiet nights without another to lay beside me.
Three years without the sound of yipping pups racing through the castle. Three years without a queen to bring light to the dark halls and rooms. Three years that I will never get back. A traitorous slight that will not go unpunished.
