As soon as they arrived at the bonfire all the boys went in complete opposite directions. Conrad walks over to a girl, Jeremiah and Carson head over to who I could only guess were Jeremiah's friends, and Steven goes over to a beautiful brunette.
Leaving me standing awkwardly alone.
I'm not the most outgoing person. I'm actually a little shy when you first meet me. I would never walk up to a random group of people, but this summer I want things to be different. So, I stroll my way over to a small group of people.
As I approach them they all give me smiles. There's one guy and three girls, all of them beautiful.
"Hi, I'm Hailey." I say sending them all a small wave.
"Hey, I'm Gavin. This is Emma, Sarah, and Joyce." The boy says, sending me a gorgeous smile.
"Hey!" All the girls say in unison. "Sit please," Says the girl Sarah in the middle.
I sit down next to Gavin as he says, "So anyway, this kid screams at me and gives me the middle finger before continuing to run around the pool. Next thing you know he's flat on his ass."
The whole group breaks out in laughs, as I let out an awkward chuckle.
"I'm a lifeguard at the club." Gavin explains. "Are you new here this summer?
"Yeah," I answer. "I'm staying with my uncle and family."
"Are you working or doing any activities this summer?" Joyce asks me.
"Um yeah I'm actually doing this debutante thing that my dad's friend roped me into."
"Oh no way! Me too!" Sarah and Emma both answer.
"It's like a family tradition for both of our families. Our mom's did it." Sarah explains to me.
"What about you Joyce?" I ask the brunette girl.
"Oh I work at the ice cream shop in town." She answers with little enthusiasm.
"She hates it," Emma says. "She definitely wants to be a debutante instead. Right J?"
The whole group breaks into laughter once again.
Joyce shakes her head and she says, "No definitely not. I would rather perish in a burning fire. But it would let me spend more time with you guys."
"Aws" are let out of the other two girls.
Just as I'm about to make a comment I hear someone yell out "Steven!" and turn my head to see Belly hitting the ground.
"I'll be right back, yeah?" I say to the group as I get up.
I head over to Belly to make sure she's okay, but as I walk up I hear her arguing with Conrad.
"You're such a brat," Conrad says to Belly.
That was my breaking point. I didn't know Belly very well yet, but I sure as hell wasn't going to let this guy talk to her this way.
"Back off, okay?" I snap at Conrad. "I don't know Belly very well, or you, but that's no way to talk to someone who's supposedly your life long friend. Belly's not a brat, but you are an asshole."
Conrad looks taken aback at first, but then his face settles into a neutral expression, with unreadable eyes.
Before he can say anything, Jeremiah runs over swinging his arms around me and Belly.
"Belly! You came. Great, we can all hangout together!" He says with his charming smile.
"I'm about to take her home," Steven says, pulling on her arm. "What are you kidding me?"
