MATILDA
prologue—pre season one

POURING EYEDROPS INTO HER LIGHT BROWN EYES, AUDREY KAREV BLINKED BACK THE BURN THAT ACCOMPANIED THE RED-ISH HUE HER EYES HELD. Legend has it that the brunette woman liked the burn. Although the sensation was calming to her, it being all she'd ever known, it'd be frowned upon to show up to her first day as a surgical intern with bloodshot eyes and tired bags.

"Audy, let's go! I'm all about being fashionably late, but now is not the time for it," Alex Karev, her twin brother, pounded on the bathroom door of their shared apartment. Audrey blinked a few more times, trying to see, but Alex was impatient. "I gotta get in there and shower! You have ten seconds before I break this door dow—"

"Funny joke," Audrey commented, the door midway open as her hand had the knob turned just enough. "There you go, your majesty." She took a few steps past him, walking down the hallway and into the living room.

She grabbed her motorcycle keys, swinging the ring around her finger and playing with her keychains. Of course her and Alex did everything together, they were against carpooling. He liked his old, broke down crap-mobile, and she liked her shiny, new motorcycle.

"Hey, make sure you wait for me in the lot when you get there!" Alex shouted from the bathroom. "Drive safe, and don't forget your helmet."

"Wouldn't dream of it," Audrey smiled, grabbing her helmet before heading out the door with her thermos, taking deep breaths.

And there Audrey was, standing at the beginning of the rest of her life with her brother by her side.

"You ready for this?"

"Only if you are."

They smiled at each other, walking into their new home for the next five years: Seattle Grace.
