Luna rushed down the hall to follow the upset girl and found her outside the dining room sniffling, tears running down her face. She felt her heart break slightly as she crouched down in front of the small girl.
"Hey sweetie it's ok you did really well" Luna said.
"No I didn't I could barley lift the balls! The others are right I'm useless" the girl said between hiccups.
"No honey you're not useless your good at plenty of other things, you're smart, funny and brilliant at drawing. Telekinesis isn't everything you might be really good at something else that we just haven't tried yet" Luna told her putting her hands on the small girls shoulders.
"You think so?" 018 asked looking up at Luna.
"I'd be willing to bet on it. Are you hungry? Lunch smells pretty good." The girl nodded in response. "Ok then let fix you up" Luna said wiping the tears away with her sleeves and pulling a tissue out of her back pocket handing it to her to wipe her nose. "Thank you" the child responded before wrapping her arms around Luna's neck hugging her as tight as she could manage. Luna paused a little shocked from the sudden hug before smiling and returning it. "I don't want to go in there, the others are going to make fun of me" she whispered to Luna. Luna pulled back from the girl "I won't let them" she stood up offering her hand to the girl "come on you can sit with me and Peter".
They collected their lunch heading to an empty table before setting their trays down and starting to eat. 018 had cheered up a bit and was currently babbling about her new favorite color and how it was so much better than all of the other colors. Luna couldn't help but smile at the girls enthusiasm. She turned to the door sensing Peter come in he looked at both of them and Luna felt a pang of worry flow through their connection but chose to ignore it. She knew he thought she was getting too attached but she refused to abandon the girl like she had been. Peter collected his lunch and joined them at the table. "Hi Peter" the child said shyly. "Hello 018" he responded politely before turning to look at Luna "Hello darling how was your day?" he asked.
"Fine thanks Peter and yours?"
"Same stuff, different day"
Lunch carried on like this the three of them making small talk. When they had finished Luna got up taking all of their plates back to the counter, waiting for their dessert which was usually fruit of some kind she looked back and saw 018 struggling to put the straw in to her box of orange juice she was about to walk back over to help when Peter took it from the girl showing her how to poke it at just the right angle and as 018 smiled at him she felt her heart melt. "It's apples today" the dinner lady spoke pulling Luna from her thoughts. "Right sorry. Do you have a knife to cut them up?" Luna asked. "Bring it straight back" the lady responded sternly. "Sure, Thanks" Luna said.
She sat at the table and went to cut up the apple for the child. "No I can eat it like that" the girl stopped her. "Well ok then" Luna said handing it her. Peter and her smiled at each other as they watched 018 attempt to bite the apple her small brow furrowed in concentration. Her missing baby teeth were making it almost impossible for her to get a bite. Peter sighed picking up the knife and holding his hand out for the apple she tried a little longer but soon gave up handing it to him with a pout. Luna tucked in to her own apple as she watched him cut it into slices for the girl. She was happy when it was the three of them the past few weeks she'd been treasuring the little moments like this that they'd had since she started going to the rainbow room. Although Peter would be loathed to admit it he'd started to care for the young girl he even admired her a bit. He'd seen her be picked on and struggle to do things but she never gave up she was a determined little thing and he loved the way she made Luna smile.
The three spent the rest of the day in the rainbow room Peter watching over the children and Luna teaching them to paint with water colors. After that they then had dinner together and it was soon the children's bedtime. 018 would always become quiet and anxious before bed Peter knew she was scared to sleep she had nightmares he pitied her for being tormented by such things at such a young age. As lights out were called the child tugged on Luna's shirt asking to be put to bed with a story. Luna agreed and turned to Peter "I won't be long" she told him. He nodded bidding goodnight to the young girl and heading off towards his room.
018 dragged Luna by the hand to her bedroom. "Go brush your teeth and get ready for bed I'll be here" Luna said sitting on the edge of the bed. She waited as the girl got ready and when she was done she pulled back the covers and tucked the girl in before sitting beside her leaning against the headboard. She told the girl her favorite story about a kind King, a powerful Queen and their beautiful child Princess Aurora and how the three of them explored the kingdom discovering fairies and recusing baby fawns. By the time she was finished the child had fallen asleep against her shoulder. She waited a few minutes to ensure the child was in a deep sleep then stood up carefully lowering the girl onto her pillow. She smiled and bent down gently kissing her forehead and leaving the room making sure to quietly close the door behind her.
Luna returned to her room changing into her pyjamas and brushing her teeth before going to Peters room. He had also changed and was waiting for her lying on top of his bed covers. He lifted his arm and she cuddled up to him lifting her head to kiss him.
"Luna I've been thinking and I've worked out the best time for us to escape"
"Go on"
"There are less guards and staff on at Christmas. If they call for back up it will take longer and we can be long gone before they arrive"
"That's six months away"
"I know"
"Peter what happens to the children when we go?"
"I don't know Luna to shut this down we need to get rid of Papa maybe then they'll be safe or some might manage to escape during the chaos. They're strong Luna we can't worry about them if were going to get out of this place alive"
"018 isn't strong. I have no problem getting rid of Papa but I can't just abandon her"
"Luna..." Peter sighed he knew this was coming.
"No Peter! We can't just leave her she'll be terrified! Don't tell me you don't care about the girl I've seen the way you look at her you want to protect her just as much as I do"
"Of course, I care about her but I care about you more she's a liability"
"I won't go without her"
"Are you sure about this Luna? You're certain this is what you want. Taking a child with us is a huge responsibility we'd have to look after her forever. We'd virtually be her parents."
"I know Peter but there isn't another choice. I'm not leaving her here and that's final. Say we destroy this place, they could take her somewhere worse. I'd never be truly free if I was constantly worrying for her"
"I suppose you're right. All I want is your happiness and safety, that's all I've ever wanted for you my love"
"I know Peter and I love you for it. I know I snap at you sometimes but I am truly grateful for all you do for me"
"I know you are darling" Peter said kissing her head. He was worried. He knew getting the three of them safely out of this place was going to be a challenge but he'd do it. He'd do anything for her.
