Luna awoke the next morning and looked at the crumpled sheet beside her Peter who had stayed last night was now gone. She hoped he'd gone to ask Papa to watch her do the task she felt more confident knowing he was there. She got dressed and brushed her teeth before staring at herself in the mirror attempting to psych her self up "you got this" she whispered. She smoothed out her hair and waited for Papa.
It was another twenty minutes or so before he arrived with a big smile.
"Are you ready Zero?"
"I don't know if I can do this Papa what if I fail you?"
"I know you won't we've practiced for this and I will allow Peter to be nearby I know you motivate each other so don't be scared" he took her and walked her to the test room.
In the middle of the room was a table with an envelope placed on the top and in front was six orderly's all looking rather apprehensive. She looked up at the elevated two way mirror wondering just how many people were watching. She turned towards the door and through the small glass window she saw Peter who gave her a small nod before looking back to Papa in the corner who motioned for her to open the envelope. When she did she saw the instructions:
5 steps backwards
4 steps forwards
3 to the left
3 to the right
Repeat four times
She focused, their heads were so loud every thought rushing past her before she envisioned them slowing down and stopping whilst linking them together then she felt it click. She'd got it. Now all she had to do was command them. The first time was easy before she felt the blood trickling down from her nose and her head started to pound. By the second time she was shaking and sweating a look of pure determination on her face but as she made them repeat it but on the third time she began to double over face twisted in pain and when by the fourth attempt she screamed out startling Peter who rushed through the door with shouting for her to stop. She did before her legs gave out and she collapsed he reacted quickly catching her in his arms. Papa was furious he motioned for the bewildered orderly's to separate the two and Peter was dragged off as Luna was carried out.
When Luna came to again she saw Papa smiling down at her. She was confused. Hadn't she failed him? Sensing her confusion he said "you did well Zero you were nearly there had 001 not stopped you I believe you could have done it. No matter he will be punished." Now Luna was visibly upset.
"Please don't hurt him Papa he was just looking out for me" she pleaded. He hushed her quickly
"Looking out for you is my job and he must be put in his place don't worry about him you just rest now" he stood up squeezed her arm and left.
Luna begun to panic she reached out to Peter in her mind and he was angry but also scared. She unlocked the door and started down the maze of corridors following the connection by imagining a string between the two.
She had found him peering through the window to the side of the room she saw him cowered on the floor the orderly's taking turns electrocuting him with long tasers. She was flooded with rage as she stuck her hand out and blew the door off its hinges. They all turned to look at her before she forced her way into their minds Peter watched with shock and pride as they slowly turned the tasers on themselves they both stopped adjusting the dials to max before convulsing and hitting the floor. This Luna looked different she looked older, more certain and angrier than ever. Peter swore he could see what appeared to be a smirk and in that moment he realized that whether she knew it or not a small part of her was enjoying this, enjoying the feeling of revenge it turns out they were more alike that he ever thought possible.
"Zero! Control yourself!" Papa strode into the room but this time when she faced him instead of shrinking away she gave him an order.
"You will never touch him again" she commanded.
Papa chuckled "you don't give the orders here Zero be a good girl and settle down" this would be his first mistake.
Luna focused all her rage into him and he doubled over his own nose bleeding as she shouted
"I've always been a good girl. I've done everything you want! Given you everything! I never disobey you so you do whatever you want to me but unless you promise not to hurt him again I will never complete another one of your never ending tasks!" He was thrown back in to the wall hands pinned either side of him as he felt his throat closing he realized had no choice to but to relent.
"Ok Zero you win put me down" he choked out.
"Say you promise!"
"What will you do Zero? Will you kill me if I don't?" he couldn't help but see how far she was willing to go which was his second mistake. He was pulled from the wall and thrown back into it the force of his head colliding with the wall made the room spin. Now he was worried.
"I promise Zero I promise" he spat and with that she dropped him before storming out with Peter in tow. She led them back to their rooms and wrapped her arms around him and resting her head on his chest. He shook his head in disbelief he was in awe he didn't think it possible to love her anymore yet he did.
"Thank you Luna"
"I wasn't just going to let them hurt you"
"You were incredible you saved me. This is what we were meant to do with our gifts"
"So I wasn't bad?"
"No Luna you protected me and that was good just as I promised to protect you" she nodded against him as he rested his chin on her head.
